In the 4 years here in CR I have been there once....this year. Have to say....Pass! Did not enjoy their food or their wine. OK at best. Same goes for Cafe Mundo....next!

Do not fret amigos - believe me - around the downtown area or within a 5 min taxi ride there are many, many great places to eat, drink, and be merry....(sorry MG - merry not gay !)

As for great wine to go along with excellent food - that is another review from this ex-pat, ex-native Californian.... 8)

I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions too - in SJ or near - while its unlikely to ever be a foodie location    lots of guys must have at least 1 or 2 places they can recommend.

Ya know, you're right - I know me   - I'll admit to a certain critical aspect to what I eat, and restaurants I frequent - candidly, I'm more critical than many; sometimes wish I was not - but at least I admit it.

So there is a good chance I will not agree with - or like - many of the recommendations (its like getting recommendations in another area in CR if you take my meaning - talk about YMMV - YMWV   :P :) ) - but still think I'd like to know the favorite places of other CRTers.

I guess things have gone down and it has been several years since I've been there, but both Tin Jo and Cafe Mundo used to be favorites of mine. Taj Mahal in Escazu was always good for Indian food. Like the food very much at the Machu Pichu in San Pedro, but has also been years since I ate there. For lower end food, but what I maybe enjoyed the most was the Colombian restaurant in the two story yellow house on Paseo Colon. Ate recently at Tinto y Blanco (not sure if remembering name correctly) and enjoyed the food and there is a very nice selection of wines. Been frequenting an Italian restaurant in Jaco lately called Paparazzi. Folks are actually from Italy and food is reasonable and good. Know this is outside SJ, but had to throw it in... Now, if we could talk Dean into opening a Greek/ Pizza/ Cheese steak place, we'd be all good.

PM me with a little detail on how you like to roll, what types of food are your favorites or do you want 100% Costa Rican cooking ? Do you like live music with dinner? Do you usually take a chica (solo) or go in large groups? Does your lady-friend know how to dress for a nice restuarant or are you pulling her straight from the Blue Marlin and taking her to places like "Tin Ho?" Are you on a super-tight (see: chilimike  ) budget or are you on vacation and do not mind spending a little extra green for a great meal and time? etc etc

I read that Cafe Mundo was closed. Is this true? Will they re open?
I really enjoyed that place. The servings were huge. I always seperated mine to have enough to take the night clerk at Sportsman. All seemed to enjoy.
Any information would be helpful

Tin Jo is open. Recently I had a great lunch there with Favorita #3.

Tin-Jo has very good food and atmosphere for taking a date. Medium priced. Also have eaten at Argentine Steakhouse little more upscale. Recommend Chicas dress conservatively. I am sure there are other places that I have yet to try. If you like authentic Mexican there is a place on the edge of downtown that has good food. I do not know its name . But I am sure you can ask your date where it is located. The servers dress in authentic Mexican attire. Sombrero's and colorful dresses and such.
