In August , HLH is starting a free breakfast deal. "If you show up and do a short term rental before 11am, you get a free American Breakfast."

Beats the heck out of the Denny's deal. :)

Another good bakery that's always busy- across from the hospital at entrance to mini mall where Pizza Akropolis is, just walk up the hill from SL past Amistad.

That's the Mister Pan Pasteleria, another of my favorite spots when I stayed at the Amistad. Got some pizza or spaghetti at Akropolis, then followed it up with a cake section or two from Mister Pan. Also, those mini-pizzas at Mister Pan frequently were a cheap quick dinner for me. :D

Will throw in that if you are in Jaco, check out Pachi's Pan. Located in the center of town, kind of across from Mas x Menos. They have amazing pastries in there. I especially like the cinamon rolls. Easy to fill yourself up there for 1500 colones or so.

Ok, gotta ask WTF is up with the "American Breakfast" being so popular on every menu down here. I just love to start my day with cholesterol, fat, grease, and lots of calories. Correlation is that I don't notice many fit people ordering the American. Something to think about.

La Criollita just down the street from INS serves a very good, reasonably-priced breakfast (including omelettes). The Express breakfasts at La Criollita cost between $3 & $4 including coffee.

For me gallo pinto hits the spot...especially when it is fortified with Salsa Lisano.

TW, yeah, I don't care for the standard "American breakfast", what I want is scrambled eggs with ham and gallo pinto, and maybe some pancakes. When I travel I don't eat lunch, I fuel up in the morning and maybe supplement it later in the day with a PowerBar. While in SJO I always try to do a 90' to 2-hour fast-walk so I need some carbs and protein in the morning. :D

Gotcha. I drink several cups of coffee and try to make it for an early lunch. Eating fruit and drinking smoothies for breakfast sometimes these days.

Smoothies in CR? I used to buy Smoothies, until I realize they weren't healthy and loaded with sugar.

I make one big blender full and drink all day. Here is what I put in mine:

Greek yogurt (real Greek yogurt, not "Greek style")
Frozen Fruit: two kinds of berries, peaches, etc
Two Scoops protein powder
Almond Milk (unsweetened) to make it more liquid
Walnuts or almonds (blend until no chunks)
Flax
Wheatgerm
And I am trying some spinach that somebody suggested, a little doesn't change the flavor

Most places you are right Roller. As much or more sugar than a soda. The place I go is all fruit, a squirt of honey and ice. I'm getting a new blender this week so I can do them anytime I want. That is a pretty interesting mix you have there. Bet it's good.

Oh, let me tell you about one mistake. Somebody told me that Agave Nectar has a low glycemic index, so I bought some and used it. Next thing I know everybody is laughing at my stupidy, and sending me links on how unhealthy it is. 90% fructose as much if not more than HFCS. Google it and you'll see it isnt that healthy.

hikertom

you may be wrong, the news cafe has been open for at least two weeks. I stopped there today and talked to a waiter. He said they are serving the buffet only, for breakfast ,$10 Starts at 6 am. Also serving lunch and dinner, they close at 10 pm. This is 7 days a week.

They will be opening a new Restaurant upstairs in November. The downstairs will close at that time. Don't take this date to the bank.

I have alway said that the beggars out front have ruined the setting, and fueled by throwing plata at them. Strictly my opinion only.
