Fogo is decent if you are selective... the baby beef is normally good and the chicken is greasy and great... not for the cheapies though

The problem with Fogo Brasil is how much better they used to be...and the Samba shows are a distant memory (the reggaeton disco is not what I'd call an acceptable substitute). An "occasion" restaurant for big parties where food is not the primary concern--maybe. By yourself or with a special one--take advantage of their wine list...multiple times. Haven't better alternatives as far as Churrascarrias (sp?) been mentioned here? How the mighty have fallen.
The reason I'm going on like this is that I touted the place 2 years ago--I didn't change; they did.

Returning to Fogo de Brasil is not in my future. Simply, the last time I was there the cost was too high and the quality too low. Too bad they are no longer being managed well.

TripAdvisor posters completely agree--all negative comments lately. That said, is there a Brazillian churascarria in SJO that does it right? Hungry youth wants to know for his April trip.

Mr. DildoMan is reasonably accurate.

Doesn't hold a candle to the Foga de Chao brand in the US & Brazil. They didn't have any filet or prime rib, only cheaper [and much tougher] cuts. Salad bar was fine but for my novia & me with no wine it totalled over $100US. The bill will be about the same at FdC in Houston & the meal will be MUCH better.

Bottom line - we'll never return & unless you have money to burn for a very average meal I would recommend you eat elsewhere.

Fogo Brasil has earned such a bad rep, I hope this post doesn't get buried but Googling around found mention of this churrascaria--A Churasscaria Brasileira:

http://www.achurrascaria.net/

Near-about on the same subject (South American beef places), there's also this Argentine BBQ venue that's been mentioned favorably (they also offer catering, evidently)--El Novillo Alegre:

Sure hope somebody tries these places and gets back to us.

Novilla Alegre has been mentioned in many posts. Highly recommended. I posted this on Sunday in the "Sportsman Lodge (SL) sucks" thread.

Novillo Alegre in Escazu is always a good choice as well as La Esquina de Buenos Aires in San Jose. Had dinner today at La Cascada in Escazu and the lomito was very good.

JazzBro, Irish: Thanks for your recommendation on Novillo Alegre. Will have to give it a try next time I am in Escazu.

Brother DM--All credit to Brother ID--my listings were merely a consolidation and to advise those who stumbled on this Thread. Sure wasn't looking to trump his ace. He's doubtless eaten there--my knowledge is theoretical.

It's sure good to have a favorable review of this venue that's suffered so much bad publicity, not least from me. I remember my first time there in '05--great dinner with a Samba show afterwards--an impossibility in these tough economic times but as Otis Redding sang, "I've got dreams to remember...".
Kudos to Brother Srilm for this report--it IS and always has been an "occasion place".

I selected eating venues differently when I had a company credit card and there was an expectation for me to take people to the best places. Now I join with you JAZZBOCR --- "I've got dreams to remember...". and a much larger wasteline.

Just remember Ticos get like 50% off there for using their credit card. You can bet that every Tico there is paying half what you are. Even worse than the 2 tiered pricing of New Fantasy.

I hear what CVCap is saying but Fogo to me is an occasion restaurant--I give a rabid rabbit's rectum what anybody else is paying IF I get the quality of food and experience I'm paying for. NF is a whole 'nother thing because it more directly affects on a weekly basis the CRT Brothers resident in CR. BUT if I go to Fogo (or is it Fugu?--the Japanese puffer fish that can be deadly) again (a big IF), I'll make sure I go with a Tica, have her pay on a CC, then give her 10% more in cash--I'll be straight to the gate and I'll be the one chortling. Thanks for the tip.

Neither entirely accurate or fair to the restaurant.

The discount offered by credit card issuers in Costa Rica are not exclusive to Fogo Brazil. They are offered in various restaurant and vary from 30 to 50%. Additionally like most promotions they are for a limited time period. The discount is not limited to Ticos but rather to holders of a particular credit card. Many foreign residents have and use Costa Rica credit cards so they qualify for the promotion.

Wasn't La Amistad going to open a sushi parlor on the 2nd floor? what happened to that? In any case, add "having a sushi bar" to the list of enhancements to Gulch life we'd like to see.
