If they think of us as suckers for tipping, what would they think of us for scratching out the service charge completely?

Also, for a culture that doesn't expect tips, there sure are a lot of TIP jars in all types of businesses. :P (I know it's usually in the gulch where many tipping gringos hang. I don't think you will see this outside of the gulch.)

Do not know where you hang out Orange but I eat at little sodas all over and do not see many propina jars  . As far as other type businesses the only one I can recall is in a bagel shop in Pavas.

200 servico charge would be the service charged automatically for tipping correct? Is it proper not to leave a tip after the service charge? Would I be considered a bastard?

Menu Example:

Hamburguesa con el queso 2000 colones 2260 colones IVI

The bill would read:

Hamburguesa con el queso 2000

Servico 200

Impuesta 260

Todo 2460

It is a good idea to give an "extra tip". But understand this: not only is it extra, for the most part, Americans are the only ones that do. Europeans, never. Ticos understand that it is included in the final bill.

Americans have a reputation for being good tippers. It is appreciated around the country. That is a good thing!

Give a tip if you find the service exceptional and you want to reward that.
Otherwise its not expected as it is in the united states for 15% so they can make above 2/hour in the US. 10% adds up quick for them and adds up to a decent living in a high volume establishment

Am neither advocating or discouraging tipping in Costa Rica. That is a personal preference and you should do what makes you comfortable. I just want to note that the waiter does not get the total 10%. It is divided among the service staff according to restaurant policy. Some establishment include the security guard in the pool.

I have no set policy. Where CRT has a presence, like Costa Del Sol, I always leave an extra 10%. At Mariscar, where I eat often, I always leave a tip for Eugene but not the other waiters who do not acknowledge my being there. BTW, Eugene is IMO, the best waiter in SJ.
I always tip extra in El Mar, HDR, Colonial, or if going with someone who is a regular at that restaurant.

Tipping at restaurants is not a costa rican custom. Since the tip is added in automatically .... when in Rome.
In fact tipping in restaurants is not the norm in most countries I have visited.

ID,

That's good info to know. So in reality, the waiter isn't even getting the entire 10%.....it's being divided up right down to possibly even the security guard? That makes me feel even better that I'm a generous person. :D

Costa Rican government requires 10% of the gross sale be added to all restaurant checks, and is distributed mainly to waiters waitresses and bartenders, the rest is distributed to other employees at the discretion of the waiters, etc. Also requires a 13% impuesto (tax).

I don't see why we should tip if it's not the custom. They always include enough for themselves. The bish bartenders at HDR think you owe them a little extra.
