The bartenders at HDR shortchanged me 1000 colones the other night and I took them the bill and my change and they brought a manager over who said "so do you want your 1000 colones" as if I was being a cheapass for pointing out that I was shortchanged.

FWIW, we ate at Shannons and enjoyed it and I believe we were billed correctly. Still, I have a hard time understanding why they think one guy by himself drank all that wine and why the manager wouldn't help out. It makes me leary of the place.

Well....... did you take the 1,000 colones. Inquiring minds want to know!

The tip they automatically add in is 10%. If the service was good I add in another 5% or even 10%, always in cash. It's usually appreciated. Also, some owners don't give the staff the tips that are added to your bill. Not legal, but they'll do it anyways.

True. :( I know that Cafe Mundo for instance treats the 10% as a "service charge" and only gives a small part of the 10% to the wait staff. This is why I typically round up the total to the nearest 1,000 colones. The result is that I "tip" between 100 and around 500 colones...20 cents to a buck extra. I never pocket coins of less than 100 CRC, just too much weight in the pockets. :)

Paco ... next time remember to call ahead and order your club sandwich before you leave the states. Those things take a longggggggg time to make , but it should be ready by the time you get to the gulch ( no promises though). :D

There probably won't be a next time unless they let me go in the kitchen and make it myself. You know the old saying, you only get one chance to make a good first impression, lousy job Shannon restaurant.

Absolutely because I was certain I was short changed.

Another thing that just came to mind, on my last nite at the Gardens Restaurant next to Castillo the bartender(girl- notice a pattern?) gave me 1000 colones less than my change should have been. Now, lets say my bill was 3,600 colones and the change from a 10,000 bill should be 6,400. It's pretty simple huh? Well, over and over I counted out in basic language that my bill plus the change only equaled 9,000 and she kept counting it back to me over and over without trying to represent it as being 10,000.. She just kept counting the bill amount and my change up to 9,000 and looking at me like it all made sense... I'm SURE she knew I knew it was 1000 short. It was stupid of her yes, but that's just what the chicas do. She probably counted it back to me totaling 9,000 five times before she realized I wasn't walking away without my money. Her purpose of counting up to 9,000 was to make it look like she was accidentally miscounting(oops *shrug*) when all it really did was keep showing she had not reached 10,000 colones yet and needed to give me another 1000. It's what chicas do so beware.

Think maybe you should start carrying smaller bills to pay your drink tab to female bartenders. :P  You seem to have a lot of problems when you use 10,000 colones notes

If you can't remeber how many drinks you have, either because you are inebriated, having too much fun, or just absent minded, do like the waitresses in Germany do in the gasthauses, place a tic mark on your coaster or a napkin each time you get a drink served. At least that way you will know if you are being ripped off. The establishment may not believe you but at least you will know not to go there again.

Hey gents,

Just had the same experience at the SL where the waitress advised there was no tip added. Later at the room when I checked the bill there was already one there. Lucky my tab was not too large but I still gave her an extra 20% on top of the one already added.

Best to make sure while there ...

As we've seen in other threads, it's the Tica way to try to make that little extra any way they can. At SL, they probably mean a tip for THEM isn't included in the bill although there is a mandatory service charge. However, they don't get to go to the register, take the 'mandatory service charge' out of the till and put it in their pocket so maybe this is the source of confusion.
