Another hidden gem, directly across from the big blue CASIO sign at the end of the walking avenue, 2nd floor.....excellent seafood, and beef dishes and fresh ceviche....

Forgot to mention the restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Sleep Inn....Maybe one of my brothers can recall the name, been for sunday breakfast twice, was impressed on both occasions.

Cafe Mundo should be included: great homemade breads, excellent caeser salad, menu mostly seafood and pasta. I normally pass on desert, but not here. If the back garden is open ask to be seated there. Right around the corner from SL.

A lot of good suggestions being made....I had forgotten all about JR's Ribs and Cafe Mundo, but they certainly do warrant mentioning.

Pollo Campesino (not to be confused with the fast food chain, Pollo Campero): One block south of the Hotel Presidente has excellent chicken and is very inexpensive. Good egg rolls as well.

If we're getting to Manolo's, why not mention the 1930 Club? It is a little nicer than Los Condes and has expats there in the afternoon. It is good for a cheap boca and they treat regulars well. They often have good versions of pescado entero frito and higado, some favs of mine. When I stayed at the Prez, I probably ate there as much as anyplace except Mariscar and maybe Manolo's. I'd walk in and they'd have an Imperial and a bucket of ice ready quickly. ABC was a favorite too, since the prices couldn't be beat. I've always liked Chicheronera Rancho Allegre (the Colombian Bar), but they don't do lunch anymore and I'm not in the gulch at night, so I don't know what it is like anymore.

My Favorite? Hamburger Factory. Good food and reasonable prices. Just up the road on avenue central from Pres on the right.

I second Hamburger Factory. Ate there last week for the first time. Excellent hamburger (although a little messy) and reasonably priced ($4 for a burger, fries, and drink). Also at at my other faves Soda Peru, JR Ribs, and Esquina de Buenos Aires.

Good thread LM.

I don't know if this is the place Zigmonger is talking about but another great meal I had was at the restaurant inside the Colonial Casino. But one word of caution, and I wish I knew this when we ate there, there are 2 menus: a Tico menu and a gringo menu.

Obviously, they gave us the gringo menu and I paid $30 for my Sea Bass ("Seabass Colonial") dinner. But it was probably the best seafood dish I've ever had ANYWHERE, so I am not complaining (too much  ).

A favorite of a number of us for a little "fine dining" within a short taxi ride is "Donde Carlos" Argentinian restaurant...who always honor graciously the CRT discount card. http://www.dondecarlos.com . The Churassco Lomito has been my consistant favorite. Great wine selections as well.

Donde Carlos gets my vote as well.

I shall add " Olio " to the list.

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewto ... light=olio

Mediterranean dishes, with great meat, seafood entres similar to Esquena. Price wise cheaper than Esquena. OK wine list, no much touristos, gringos.
