Not pricey, no atmosphere but hard to beat the Princessa Marina. Couple of locations but easiest from your hotel is in Sabana Sur.

^I agree with Irish Drifter. Excellent food, superior service, and reasonable prices. Try the fish ceviche, best in town.

Just tell any taxi driver "La Princesa Marina en Sabana". They should know it. The ride from your hotel is about 1,500-2,000 colones ($3-4), depending on traffic.

Seafood soup is pretty good also.

Very crowded at lunch time during the week with local office workers, and 7 days dinner time, best to go if you can off hours, otherwise service is very slow and they jam people in, tables are very close.

Order two drinks at a time, because even when they aren't real busy, service is a little slow--I don't know if they understaff the waiters or what.

Are you talking about Princesa Marina?

Yes, during peak periods it can be crowded, almost full. But I think the service is excellent, during busy periods or not. And the waiters are all very courteous and competent. They are literally almost running by with the food. I've never waited more than 2 minutes to get a menu and get my drink order. I like the place.

If you are staying or in downtown, Tin Jo probably has best combo of food and atmosphere for many seafood dishes. Of course, it is asian food as well. Some of their Thai dishes are good and unique for San Jose. I agree Princesa Marina is a good value, but sometimes you want more atmosphere and fine dining. Just another option...

My girl used to always take me to a place called "Balcon de Mariscos", not sure what part of town it was in, but is about 5 minutes from the gulch. I thought the food was comparable to Princessa Marina, but had a better atmosphere. They have a big boca menu, so you can try a lot of different dishes for very little cash.

Are you sure of the name and the distance from the gulch?

There is a restaurant named "Banco de la Mariscos" on the old road from Escazu to Santa Ana. I undertand they have also opened one in Heredia.

Peak hours at lunch and week nite dinners, the waiters are running and that was my point. Service suffers when they are crowded. Too small for their crowd at those hours. One of my favoritas, been there a hundred times, lived around the corner for 9 months, great place.

Princess Marina gets my vote. And, if it matters, they have a good bartender. A pina colada or a zesty bloody mary there are as good as you will find anywhere.

Banco de Mariscos is in Barva, north of Heredia

Both are excellent.

Princesa Marina for me as well...I think there are two..I know the one by Parque Central. Try to get there on off hours. Only place better for seafood is Playa Azul in Nicaragua.

I think there are 4 La Princessa Marina restaurants and none of them are near parque central. I think you mean parque La Sabana.

"Balcon De La Mariscos" has Great food. IMO , better than La Princesa Marina.
