Soda Tapia:

I am sure many of our esteemed board members have visited this what is often called the most popular Soda in Costa Rica, Soda Tapia. It is located directly across the street from Parque Sabana before you make the right turn onto the autopista heading towards Escazu.

A very popular place of both many a gringo and locals as well. Nothing inexpensive about this place as far as prices go, and if you wanted to make the argument it’s not a Soda at all, I can understand that, but as far as quality of food goes I love the place. Open well it appears they are never closed but I don’t know the full hours of operation only that no matter what time I pass there they are open serving breakfast lunch & dinner at all times.

I’ve eaten there 3 times in the last two weeks as I am hooked on their sandwich called the El Gordo! It is a sliced flank steak sandwich with cooked onions, cheese, Tomatoes, toasted Cuban style bread, & Mayo. For what ever reason the combination of above makes it the best dam tasting sandwich I’ve ever had in SJO. French fries are always hot and fresh and my wife has had breakfast twice and club sandwich another time which was equally tasty but does not compare to the “El Gordo”.

Parking is tough, so take a taxi if you’re a local and depending on the time of day the traffic if you sit outside can be a bit annoying but it has a nice view of the park and although not your typical local soda good quality food and worth the price with a very diverse menu reminds me of a diner back home. If your into quick Sodas & haven’t been I highly recommend it.

Sorry CRT gourmet. This time I have to respectfully disagree with you. The times I have eaten there I found the food mediocre at best and the prices way out of line compared to similar places.

I know it is very popular with Ticos so my opinion is definitely in the minority but it tends to be the majority opinion with most gringos, who I have spoken too, who tried the place.

Best thing I can say about the place is the quirky ordering system is very unique and unusual.

Irish Drifter.. No problem, as stated its NOT INEXPENSIVE, & perhaps since the only thing I order is the GORDO, i'm overstating but the sandwich has me hooked,.

Perhaps I should actually try something else next time... but the steak sandwich reminds me of something on the Jersey Shore growing up so I get home sick some times......

Sounds like we have brokered a deal. You will try something else and I will give it another shot and order the Gordo :D Having spent summers of my misguided youth on Long Beach Island perhaps I will also feel the nostalgia :o

Maybe we should give the Shiites and Sunni's lessons on the art of compromise
