IF you are staying around the SL or Amistad definitely head away from the gulch for a ton of places available for lunch. I recently found a little vegan restaurante in Barrio Escalante. In the course of walking there I never realized there was so much around where I live. Around Hospital Calderon are more restaurants than could be mentioned. In the area around Akropolis there are tons of little Tico restaurants and sodas with much lower prices than in the gulch. If you continue around the other side of the hospital there are more. Fast food as well as some pretty decent looking spots. If you continue through Aranjuez and on into Barrio Escalante there are some good looking restaurants that aren't priced near as high as mediocre joints around the gulch. Definitely go check it out. I never realized so much was up that way as I just hadn't had occasion to walk in that direction.
