so not exactly a restaurant question, but can anyone recommend a really good butcher shop in San Jose where you can get good quality steaks...I don't mind driving around a little (escazu etc) to get good quality...thanks for any tips out there!

I like Don Fernando in Plaza Colonial, Escazu - 2289 9165 (closed on Sundays) - about 2 blocks west (ish) from Scotia Bank in San Rafael.
8:30 am to 7:00 PM - Mon- Sat
Nice little restaurant as well (not open as late and opens at 11:30 AM)

Also locations in:
Santa Ana - 2282-0181
Curridabat - 2271-3334
Tamarindo, Guanacaste - 2653-2264

Hope this helps.

Woozo

I'm not sure if there are locations in San Jose but San Martin in Liberia has the best meat I've ever tasted at the lowest prices I've ever seen. If you happen to be close to Liberia, check it out. It's in a set of industrial buildings across from the airport. I bought Premium Nicaraguan beef there. You can fill your freezer with top quality beef for under $50. They are not a butcher. This is wholesale. Stay away from Costa Rican beef. It's the worst I've ever had. San Martin Nicaraguan beef on the other hand is the Latin American Kobe Beef. Melts in your mouth.

I will have to 2nd Don Fernando in Plaza Colonial, Escazu - 2289 9165. Angus beef is the best in town.

I have tried Don Fernando a few times and could never finish it. Just a tough steak with terrible flavor.

Which cuts are you guys ordering that you are raving about?

I have tried the ribeye and strip.
