Hank I'm told the reason for TP in the trash can is that typically CR plumbing uses smaller drain pipes than we use in the U.S. Consequently, it's very easy for the drain pipes to get clogged. It's all part of the childhood training: don't toss TP in the toilet, wear dark clothes at night, with the dark clothes be sure to walk in the street, preferably in twos or threes, even better with another group of two or three going the same direction immediately across the street. Even better if all of the above is done while it's raining. :D :D

I believe Anthony Bourdain advised in his book Kitchen Confidential to always use the restroom before you order in a place you've never dined before. If the restroom is not immaculate, assume the kitchen is not as well - and is most likely less sanitary than the kitchen.

Always exceptions to every situation.

La Princessa Marina bathroom (at least the one in La Sabana), spotless.

Costa del Sol bathroom disgusting.

A number of reports on patrons being ill after eating at La Princessa but not a Costa.

Sorry fans. I pass on both of these places.
