yeah, that is the guy, from wisconsin, was a social worker, etc, right?

anyway, went back to las palmas, checked out the bbq and yeah there were locals which was nice. i really like the little nica that works at the bar. all in all i think the place is just average and most of the menu a little overpriced but the location is nice and garden motif is pleasant.

Yes.....Tom was from Wisconsin and had been employed as a social worker at one time. Later, had some sort of a greenhouse business. Anybody know what Tom is doing now, or where he is?

i had a number of excellent meals there. prices are similar to cafe mundo and la esquina de buenas aires. you can't beat their lunch specials. 2 casados. 1 for 2000 colones and the other for 2500 which included a natural juice and coffee, tax etc. included. 1 night was disappointing but due to master chef out enjoying festival of lights with his family. also had an excellent $4 omlette, taxes and coffee included. my favorites have been el mundo and la esquina and now las palmas is in the mix. have also had decent meals at the balcon de europa a few doors down from the NY bar.

I should clarify about the bar menu. The bar menu has been printed but they don't yet have the food. Over Xmas week they didn't have much. I wouldn't expect it to be implemented until Mike is down again.

It's good eats, Nhhank....be sure to pick up your 10% off card at Amistad. It's automatic I do believe if you're staying at Castillo. They have a 2700 Colone "executive lunch special" as well which attracts a lot of locals from the government building down the way from the place....maybe it's across the way....I get turned around....

Whats the outside bar like these days ? Anyone hanging there in the afternoons since the new ownership ? Are the Chica's still being chased away from there ?

Have they opened the inside bar to drinkers again ?

I usually stay in Room 18 at the Castillo, which is the end room on the first floor, & yes there were people in the outside bar in the afternoon/early evening making noise & cutting into my beauty sleep

They appeared to be locals, I haven't seen any girls in there. One chica I brought back in the afternoon was scared she'd see someone she knew while walking to my room.

Haven't been inside, so don't know about the inside bar.

As of Feb this year, the back bar IS open. It is NOT like it was in the "old days". No unescorted working girls are allowed. The bar menu still wasn't implemented yet but you still can order SOME food while at the back bar. It is generally limited to appetizers, soups and a few other dishes. Check with the bartender on duty. The cadre of bartenders are all friendly, helpful and at least somewhat bilingual. The bar and rest. do now attract more Ticos than before. They mostly come from the INS building across the street or from other nearby businesses but I still wouldn't call the place a Tico hangout.

The front bar is still there doing business as usual. There is now an espresso machine at the bar so they serve cappuccino, etc. They lost their Nucaraguan chef while I was there but they managed to hire another chef from another Peruvian restaurant in the area so they barely skipped a beat.

They serve breakfast 7 days. From 7 on weekdays and from 8 on weekends. There is a good selection from Tico breakfast, pancakes, omlettes, huevos rancheros... to an American breakfast. Prices are reasonable.

The new owner was in town for a weekend while I was there. He was very busy implementing improvements to the place.

Castillo guests can receive 15% off. Just show your room key.

While las Palmas may not be the Gardens of old, I think that it is better in some ways. Definately a worthwhile place for a meal or a quiet(er) drink with a (usually) friendly crowd. Claus fro Denmark (Yes, he is still there!) had some sort of confrontation (probably drunken) one night and had to go to the hospital for stitches in his hand. The place is usually tranquillo and friendly.

Claus in an unusual fellow with an interesting past if you ask him about his regal Danish lineage. He is another of CR's unusual but somewhat comforting consistencies I'll buy him a beer next time I show up there. Your post brought back great memories of time at the Castillo (Palmas bar).
