Orange,

During my June/July trip, the same thing happened to me. My friend and I ate identical meals at JR's RIBS, except that I had cole slaw. I became terribly ill and he did not. I spent the next three days on the toilet. I went to a pharmacy across from Caulderon Hospital where the physician/owner of the pharmacy sold me some anti-bacterial pills. It cleared it up overnight. I cannot say for sure, but I am 99% certain it was the cole slaw from JR's RIBS.

I suggest anyone going to JR's RIBS.....PASS ON THE COLE SLAW.

My bet is it was the cole slaw which can get you anywhere in the world--I think it's a haven for bacteria, mainly from the mayonaise if left unchilled.

Seems like I have read other posts in the past since I have been a member of people getting sick at JR's.

I called my physician today to ask what the exact diagnosis I had back in '04 was and was told it was "Campylobacter" and most likely caused by ingesting undercooked chicken at the Costa Del Sol.

I recall eating there a few times that week and once I looked down and realized the chicken was still bright pink...Sent it back and had it cooked further but the damage may have already been done.

Doctor advised me to drink only bottled water, no ice cubes, no salad, cook everything well done.

Hey Special K...I waited to respond to your first post until you determined that you didn't get sick from anything you ate at my house. WHEW I thought you were going to write about it in the local newspapers and then the chicas wouldn't come home with me. As to the issue of the water and consequently the ice here in CR, I was told long ago that it is as safe as any in the U.S. I have been drinking the water, and always drink beer with ice in it, and to the best of my knowledge never had a problem from it.

JR's ribs is a favorite of mine, but henceforth I will skip the cole slaw. That seems to be the most obvious source of Orange's problem. Mayonaise is quite often the source of bacteria problems, and probably even more so in a third world country.

The only place I've ever seen mayo consistently stored at room temperature is in Costa Rica. Have you noticed that, for example at Sportsmens, the mayo is kept at the table with the rest of the condiments? Yum, yum, yum, barf.

I noticed even the Ketchup (which clearly says refrigerate after opening) is left out...I skip the condiments pretty much everywhere. Same here in Panama...if I didn't put it in the fridge it would be a Salmonella magnet.

I have been a lover of sushi for 30 years. I have never had a problem with it, (only once ate it in CR, with no problem there). Once about five years ago the sushi chef in a Broward County restaurant reccomended Mahi Mahi, (dorado). I know even as ceviche, this can be a risky fish. Cooked, it is among the best. I tried it, against the thoughts of my little voice, and after a couple of sakes, and did I suffer that night. Violent vomiting, and then the other end. At least I was home! Triple rough to go thru that on a plane.

Yo Orange!

Check out the post I made on this thread way back in March 2007:

https://costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewto ... s&start=15

I truly love those phucking ribs, but V got violently sick BOTH TIMES we went there, and the second (and LAST) time I went there, I was shuking (Shitting and puking at the same time) for about 2 days straight!

Not the best way to be while in Costa Rica trying to be a sexy bitch...

I am a bit weary to try the rib place after these stories. About a year ago at SL a CRTer who is a chef in the states told me most kitchens in CR would fail a U.S Heath inspection.

I used to work in a kitchen in the States that should have failed their health inspections. The food was great, though!

Man, I was going to go to JR's Ribs tomorrow for lunch. Should I pass? Maybe I'll get ribs and just not eat the slaw.
