I won't be there until the 16th so we won't run into each other.
You should enjoy the Taormina as a hotel. The bar is also good, drinks are reasonably priced. Talent there is hit or miss early but there are usually a few in there late nights. The bar food is very good. I had the pizza, fish and chips, ceviche and nachos. All were good and priced very reasonably.
You will be very close to Pension 506 (formerly Zona 2) and Little Havana. Both are now under the same ownership / management and the women go back and forth between the two places. You can sometimes find a winner here.
As you exit Taormina, two blocks to the right in a very TICO place called VIPs. I have seen some pretty cute ladies in there and also some very scary ones. Price is very cheap for on premises play. Does not get started until late (after 10 pm or so) and the walk is kind of sketchy between VIPs and the hotel. Keep yoor eyes open.
Also across the street from VIPs is a regular Tico bar that usually features live music, especially on the weekend. I have seen some cute women going in and out of the place. You can't miss it, a big white building with graffiti all over it.
If you are TRULY a good looking, rather young guy then you might have some luck hitting on some regular, non-P4P women. Just be careful not to flirt with someone Tico's GF.
Also within a short walk (past Pension 506) are bar Poas and Bar Malibu. Both bars cater to older expats and Ticos. Drinks are reasonable and the food can be pretty good. Women frequent both bars but you will find them a bit older, rougher and cheaper than those in the regular venues. Occasionally you can find a winner. Be advised that I heard Bar Malibu is has changed ownership since I was there in April.
Also, just past Pension 506 on the right side of the street is Soda Peru. This is a great place to get lunch / early dinner. Very good food at a reasonable price. A lot of seafood dishes.
Since you have read the forum already I don't have to tell you about the Sportsmens or Hotel Del Rey bars. Both are walkable from the Taormina but I would advise a taxi after 8 pm or so if you are by yourself. Fare with tip to either place should be only 1000 colones with tip (about $2) and it will be much safer. Cabs in front of the Taormina (like in front of the HDR or Sportsmens) will try to charge you 2000 colones at night. Even though it's only about four bucks, they are trying to get over on you. It just depends on whether you want to flag down a taxi that will use the meter or if you are in a hurry and are willing to part with the extra couple of $$.
Also, after dark in the area around the Taormina / Pension 506 / Bar Poas, if any woman flirts with you on the street, she is most likely a he

.
You should find plenty of fun things to do in San Jose for 10 days. I enjoy it more than Jaco. While the Hotel Cocal has a lot of hot women there at night, you will find that that is pretty much the only place to go until it closes. Then there are a couple of late night bars to go to. You will find Jaco is much more expensive for accomodations, food, drinks and company. Also it is VERY hot and probably the worst beach in Costa Rica.
Have a great trip.
