Mr. Black,
I've always wanted to go to Cartegena and I've heard the beach at Santa Marta is very beautiful. I'm stuck in the states after a trip to San Jose in May, but let us know how the trip goes. I can travel anytime after August this year due to previous obligations. My spanish is just OK, but I know I would enjoy that trip. I've been to Medellin once and want to go back there just finding the time is my biggest obstacle. Here's wishing you a great trip and let us know how it goes. Thanks

I've heard Cartegena is more expensive than Medellin, is that true. If so what is the going rate for a hotel room in the medium price range? Obviously more expensive by the ocean and are they mostly Chica friendly of just certain ones that are? I'm wanting to go there and need to do some homework on the scene. Appreciate any info you have.
Thanks

Cartagena is more expensive than Medellin in all respects (including mongering). If mongering is your top priority, stick with Medellin. If you've never been to Cartagena, check it out at least once... but focus on the old city, cuisine and museums. The beaches near the tourist zones (Bocagrande and Laguito) suck. If the beach is your thing (and a little bit of mongering), El Rodadero in Santa Marta is the place to be.

Thanks for the input, how close is the beach at Santa Marta to Cartegena? I'm thinking of taking 10 days for some sightseeing of the old city and then maybe the beach at Santa Marta. It looks like from your post there is mongering at Santa Marta? I'm flexible with my trip and can fly as employee's family, so getting from point A to Point B is easy for me. I just need more info and maybe a wingman to keep things upright.

Santa Marta is a little over 200 km distance from Cartagena... or about a 4 hour car or mini-bus ride> Barranquilla is midway between the two cities. As far as mongering goes, it's not the bountiful retail type you find in Cartagena, but, there are some working girls in the bars and discos near the beach in Rodadero as well as a few girls on the malecon during the afternoon. Santa Marta is our favorite spot for beach vacations in Colombia.
