If you want to use your Verizon number in Costa Rica you will probably need them to put in the Global Sim card. I took my IPhone 4s with me and other than having the visual voicemail not work correctly everything else was fine. When you get back you simply cancel the global plan until your next trip then as long as you still have the Sim card you just call them up and tell them to add the global plan to your account again.

Verizon 4g phones are unlocked for international use. Simply buy a local SIM card upon arrival and you can call and text locally (worldwide with whatsapp). Nothing else needed.

Seabreeze you are correct in the phones being unlocked. I was not sure if the OP wanted to use his Verizon number in Costa Rica or if he was wanting to get a new Sim and Costa Rica number. I should have clarified more that if you want to use an Iphone 4s with your existing Verizon number you will need to get with Verizon before you leave and have them put in the Global Sim and add the Global plan to your phone while you are out of the country then cancel the plan when you return home and they will prorate the plan for you.
