First of all I have to say this forum is absolutely AMAZING and the the information shared by all my soon to be fellow brother CRT members, helps alleviate of the pre-game jitters. Especially Brother Orange's post for the newbies. Wow that was so helpful and is appreciated beyond words. Thank you Brother Orange!!

This site and all your posts has already been worth the monies spent for the VIP access 100 times over. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

I feel like an experienced CRT member with out the experience. Can't wait to report and share my own experience.

I am making my first trip to Costa Rica after many years of curiosity. My friends all tell me how ridiculous it is and the stories are hard to believe. Although after reading the many posts, once again the anticipation is beyond my imagination. Can I say sleepless nights? They are setting in which is bad considering I may not be sleeping much once I get there. Can't wait to say the least...

As indicated I am arriving early morning this Friday (October 10, 2014) and have reservations at the HDR. From what was read this is a must for at least one night for my virgin eyes. Would you agree or should I look to somewhere else?

I would honor the chance to meet up with some CRT members and watch and learn (in awe I'm sure) from the experienced and learn from those who have paved a path before me. Having been to Pattaya City in Thailand and having a similar experience of a "mentor and guide" show me the ropes there, it proved to be invaluable so that the nice guy, naive and sometimes wide eye opened gringo doesn't get taken advantage of.

FYI I am a clean cut, fairly in shape, 41 year old guy ready to party after the separation of my 4th fiancé! Yes I have dodged the bullet 4 times and never been married. Maybe it was all meant to be so I could go on this trip!!!!

I am only there for one night but will return Thursday 10/16 for 2 nights before I have to depart back to California early Saturday morning.

I need to book a car for I must goto RIU hotel in Guanacaste for business. After reading the posts this has me concerned and I would appreciate any recommendations.

From the posts I was looking at Solid rental Car agency or had found on the internet a company called 4x4rentacar.com with a really friendly guy named Luis that called me and is supposed to pick me up at the airport. That seemed a little odd but was not sure. They were saying it was going to be $400 all in??? Wow so much for the teaser rates.... Not sure what to do on this matter and would appreciate some guidance.

Should I pick up car on Saturday instead of Friday morning in San Jose?
Take a cab to San Jose?
Which place is best or recommended for this wet season?
Do I really need a 4x4 to get to Guanacaste?

Last few questions: Upon returning to San Jose on Thursday should I stay at another hotel instead of the HDR? Sportsman lodge or Dunn? Or the others CRT has discounts for and which would be best for a newbie like me? And of course are there going to be any fellow CRT experts back on Thursday and Friday the 16th? First rounds will be on me for sure!!

Thank you for my rant and all my questions. Once again I so appreciate you all for the information and guidance for guys like me who like to be informed and not taken advantaged of.

Looking forward to an experience of a lifetime.....To say the least

your energy level and outlook are where they need to be. You'll have fun at the HDR, but it is easier to meet vets at SL, where the atmosphere is easier to meet guys hanging out. The HDR can be frantic and 'bumping into guys' is harder to do. On my last trip there were 2 guys at the SL bar, and I wasn't really looking for wingmen so I ignored them ... until they asked if their CRT discount was included in the bill. I will always take the time to meet a couple of brothers. That doesn't happen at the HDR.

La Amistad is also a great choice to meet vets. It is 2 minutes from the SL, and a great place to stay.

Welcome to the board.

I would not rent a vehicle in San Jose to go to Guanacaste if you are the only one traveling. I think that is about a 5-hour journey for an experienced driver. Either contact one of the transportation services who advertise on this site, or contact the Costa Rica Shuttle Bus. Let someone else do the driving while you relax, and save some money.

Another way to get to Guanacaste is to fly either Nature Air (http://centralamerica.com/cr/tran/travlair.htm ) or Sansa (http://www.flysansa.com) and then get a taxi to your destination. Quicker and less hassle for maybe even less $$.

I'm an unabashed and unashamed lover of the HDR, of all these hotels, it is the largest with the most massive number of chicas available to you at any time. You are smack dab in the middle of all the action. Especially for the first time visitor, it blows your mind, non stop activity, evenings can showcase over 100 chicas.

Want one at 6 am ? Take the elevator down and take your pick. Morning noon and night they float about, and the nightclub Key Largo is 50 yards away and hopping after midnight, it's like nightclubs we went to when we were young except we can have any girl there...

For a short stay, and for the first stay, especially for a newbie who doesn't know his way about. I highly recommend the HDR, you can get as much poontang as you can handle without traveling about. :D

I say this with a caveat, visit the Sportsman's, it's more of a hangout for CRT members, has great food, and boasts a smaller more quieter fraternal atmosphere, a small number of girls are always found there as well. If you say when you'll be at the bar there, announce here in trip reports, usually some members coming down the same time will respond and you will meet some guys who can show you the ropes. The other hotels are smaller, many don't have ladies there and a newbie can check them out to see if he likes the quieter low key atmospheres, but for utmost fun, those are the two best choices. 8)

you don't say. But please, NG when selling yer love of the place, talk about that fabulous $11 elevator ride.

I only pulled 4 from the HDR last trip, but that $44 in savings is 3 low-rent sessions on C6!!!

and by the way, I love the place too. I just don't stay there.

Well BD, I'm not as youthful as you so when I visit, I'm happy with 2 a day, one at an MP in the afternoon and one in the eve at HDR so the $11 is no big deal to me. The HDR is usually $50 a night, and some guys who complain about that fee are staying at hotels that charge $70 a night or more...

As an experienced financial guy, I'm going to subtract the cab fare from the $11 unless you're staying at the Morazon, that's usually about $4, so now your savings is only $7, and that's only if the hotel you're at is the same low price as HDR...also lay down the law to the girl, the "hour" service starts when you walk into your room, I've heard sad tales where the chica declares the ride time. Also, if she requests ''taxi money" along with the agreed on price, and you agree, subtract that !!!

You are absolutely right on this point. I taxi back to my (cheaper than yer damned HDR) hotel room.

I think it's just the idea of having to pay a guest fee that pisses me off.

Glad I can help.

My advice would be that since this is your first trip and you have very limited time on the ground, use your time wisely. That means don't waste time with typical HDR sharks. That means don't waste time trying to visit every MP on the map. With that said, you should be able to hit Zona 2, Scores, and New Fantasy. Other than that definitely a good idea to stay at HDR one night, just to experience it.

Other advice:
-Don't let a whiff of pu*sy make you lose your mind
-Don't overdo it on the alcohol
-Don't walk alone at night in San Jose
-Do try to meet somebody to hang with to make most efficient use of your time

As for traveling to Guanacaste, take a local flight to Liberia. It's much faster, less than 1 hour versus 5-6 hours on the road.

Fare Summary (http://www.flysansa.com)

Date Flight Route Departure Arrival Passengers Price per Passenger Total Price
Fare (USD)
10/11/2014 RZ-5784 SAN JOSE(J.SANTAMARIA) - LIBERIA 13:35 14:22 Adulto (1) $40.00 $40.00
10/16/2014 RZ-1053 LIBERIA - SAN JOSE(J.SANTAMARIA) 07:57 08:50 $40.00 $40.00
Fare: $80.00 $80.00
Tax: $50.00 $50.00
Total: $130.00 $130.00
Total Price : USD 130.00

Or take the Interbus Shuttle. Driving that long by yourself sucks in CR.

Orange, excellent advice but I'm confused by your statement "HDR sharks". perhaps it is good advice to warn Newbies about sharks, I have found them at MP's and Sportsman's as well. I continue year after year to pull magnificent GFE providers from HDR, just got to blow off the catcalling girls. My advice in HDR, DON'T ALLOW the girl to pick you, the aggressive ones have a higher chance of being a "shark". Spend time discussing with the girl that you are interested in what your expectations are and agree on the price and let her know you DO NOT pay upfront before the session begins.

If you don't get a good vibe from the girl and wishy washy squirmy answers, politely thank her for her time and move on and keep interviewing until you find one you click with. In my experience in CR, there are fabulous finds and fowl females wherever you go, not one place has all bad or all good choices. Newbies tend to get excited with the really hot ones and jump the gun too quick sometimes, that's when they get burned, no matter where they are. My advice to any newbie is to do a thorough interview relaying what you want and getting a good feeling from the girl, then no matter where you are, your success rate will be high... :D :D :D

No newbie knows what this statement really means until they've been on the ground, and if they've never mongered before then negotiating skills don't really exist.

Honestly it is hard to qualify the term to someone that hasn't been there. An aggressive chica may or may not be a 'shark', and a 'shark' may or may not give a first-timer a good session. AND ... there isn't always agreement between vets whether a chica is a 'shark' or not.

IMHO, to a first-timer in HDR, they're all sharks. Just tell em to get in there and start swimming. What doesn't eat ya makes ya faster.

Wow once again thank you all for your incredible insights and help.

Brother Orange, once again your dedication and obvious desire to serve is awesome. I will look into the flights for sure, I just thought it would be cool to drive and see some of the country as well. But with Brother Orange, Lennydo and GoodDayJohn all recommending against it, maybe I am a little ambitious for my own good.

100% agree with BashfulDwarf, paying for a "guest fee" seems crazy. But at least one time I feel I need to experience it. It being the HDR based on all my reading. I consider the fee a cost of admission to the club.

3 days and counting and my boots will be on the ground ready for action. Can't wait!

Thanks again for all your insights. I will continue to study and read all the posts and begin my studies for a "Grand Education!"

My first trip to the HDR was June of 2013. That's when I knew what it felt like to be a rock star. Like anything , the novelty has worn off (albeit still awesome) in the subsequent 6 or 8 times i've been there. Like Sade says, "It's never as good as the first time!" But again still quite awesome!! Enjoy your trip!!

When I was a green newbie well over 10 years ago, the vast majority of chicas I picked up from HDR and the MP's still gave me great sessions, I only got burned  maybe 10% of the time, I suspect the fear of "sharks" is greatly exaggerated...so even inexperienced newbies should have a fabulous visit and then return later, sharpen their skills and insure themselves 98% success ratios!!!
