First timer here. 60 yo and looking to do some non gulch side trips. I have a question- many of them have non air conditioned lodging. How hot does it feel down there and is a ceiling fan enough? |

The climate anywhere depends on the elevation above sea level. Generally, in Costa Rica, the coastal areas will be at sea level and will be hot and humid. I was in Jaco in January, and I was "soaked to the skin" just walking around town all day - - - as if I had fallen into a lake. San Jose is in an area of Costa Rica called the "central valley". It is at an elevation of about 3,500 feet above sea level. San Jose is much more comfortable at any time of the year than the coastal areas, IMHO. The central valley is surrounded by higher mountains where it will be even cooler. Unless you're REALLY sensitive to heat and humidity, the lack of A/C should not be a problem except on the coasts. |

A side trip to Poas or Irazu volcano, will see temps drop down in the 40's. A side trip down to Jaco, Manuel Antonio, Puerta Viejo or any other city at see level and you are sweating like a pig with temps from 95-102. However, most all good hotels on the coast have a.c. Don't try and save $10 a night for a room with just a ceiling fan. Not worth it. |

The tour that I'm looking at has one hotel without A/C. Laguna lodge in Tortuguero. Thanks for the replies. |
