Hey fellas:
I am coming down with a virgin and he wants to go deep sea fishing out of Jaco or Quepos Saturday or Sunday March 8/9.
We would like to share costs with 2 other fellas and also interested in getting a better deal than just tourist rates. All guidance would be appreciated.

Please let me know.
Thanks
Californiamann

Thank you guys for all the PM's and offers. We decided to charter a boat so the 2 of us can catch more fish!!

We chose Captain Tom ( tom@captaintoms.com ) who has a new 36' express out of Los Suenos and gave it to us for $1,200 all inclusive or $1,000 cash and we bring our own lunch and drinks! I must of emailed 5-6 captains and they all gave me a great discount if you chat with them for a while. We h  ad a 45' Red Baron lined up for $1,500 (that is a huge boat), but my mate didn't want to spend the extra $250....SOB.

Ciao

How many do these charters typically fit?

Hioctane:

My 2 wingman insisted on at least a 36 foot boat just in case the seas got rough ( 20+ miles off shore) and also wanted to rent their own charter so they could catch more fish. My understanding is every fisherman on the boat rotates through the main chair in half hour increments. Therefore, if you can afford it- less fisherman means more time in chair and more opportunities to land game fish.

I researched and emailed 10 or so fishing charters and this is what I found:

The more I researched and emailed- the better the prices got.
Boats under 32' are MUCH cheaper/smaller than boats 36' or larger.
Many of the captains refer clients to each other or as middlemen (which could add $200-300 to your charter).
Some are Captains are certified to take Charters out 65 miles...some Captains are just guys wearing a hat!
Not really a difference chartering from Los Suenos or Quepos Marina.
Make sure all drinks, lunch, and bait are included in price.
Offer cash - cash is king.
Most still want a contract with $100 deposit or credit card.
As you finalize your price at end of negotiations, most captains will take $200 off if you bring your own lunch & beer/water/soda.
Boats under 36' hold 3-4 fisherman max comfortably. Boats hold more as they get bigger. But since most boats have one chair for fishing, your buying comfort: smoother ride, twin screws, bigger bathroom, A/C, fridge, bed, TV, Stereo, kitchen, etc.
We could of chartered a 45' boat called Red Baron (which looked cool) for $1500, but one of my wingman thought boat was too big for 2 fisherman and wanted to save extra $250 for other things.
Last, but not least, if you bring chicas from the night before... get a larger boat with a bed and AC.

Bottom line - just call around and take a week or two to decide. There are 100's of boats...

Think about your safety. If your going 30-40 miles off shore, a certified Captain on a larger boat will be inherently safer (twin screws, radio, back up radio, etc) than a really smaller boat with a local driver/captain. IMHO.

Hope that helps someone...

Thanks Californiamann. I was just wondering if you could max out the number of fisherman on each boat, which is more economical? a 32' or a 36'? It sounds like you are looking at 400-500 per person.

we will be fishing the same weekend.. we have a 36 footer at $1200 per day with bait and food.. we will have 5 fishing each day (3 days).. max on boat is 7.. ac cabin is nice to get out of the sun. the last thing you want is a sun burn on trip..that is $240 per day (per man) also tip needs to be added for deck hand..keep in mind you will also need to pay taxie where boat is and back to hotel.. so total for day could be $280 to $290 for the day.. cash is what they want for lower prices!!!!

Thanks Tinman: Forgot to add tip of 15% if you catch fish!

HiOctane: your right - it's cheaper with more people. But if this is a bucket list thing and your going out one day like my two guest are - then you get more seat time in the fishing chair with less people.

In our case - its $600 a piece (including bringing food, beer tip).

good Lucik
