Staying at La Amistad Sept 3-7, Cocal in Jaco 7-10 and back to La Amistad until the 12th. A quick question - I haven't been back since 2007 - is the money I saved from that trip still good? I once had a situation where the Country's money had been withdrawn and new money put in place and I had the wrong kind on arrival.

Probably not, there are new "plastic" bills that came out in 2011.

I think old money may be exchanged at the National Bank only, if at all. There's a branch on Avenida Central, about 5-6 blocks from Hotel Presidente.

WOW! A stroll down memory lane with one of the charter CRT members.

To my knowledge all old bills can be exchanged for new bills. However, the only place that you can accomplish this is at the Banco Central Costa Rice (BCCR) located just south of the main post office in San Jose. Do not confuse BCCR with BCR as BCR can not help you.

Correct you can change the old bills at the Cental Bank.. Otherwise they are no good on the Street.

Thanks guys for the response. I get in around 10PM. I'm assuming that the money exchange booth will be open at that time of night - I certainly hope so!

yes but the one on the main level right where you claim your bags is a rip off.... Take lots of small US bills until you can exchange the next day. Everyone accepts dollars you just get screwed if you don't have exact change, lots of 1's, 5's, 10's will get you by for a day or two

I haven't been to CR in a few years either and I have about $325 (Canadian) in colones. I better find a way to cash them in before its too late.

I'll be at Mona Lisa from 9-5/8 and Cocal from 9-8/11 so our schedules overlap quite a bit. PM or post here if you are interested in meeting up in SJ or Jaco. It's my first trip to CR. I've been connecting on this board with a few other guys who will be around the same times. It would be great to get a group of us together. Have a great trip.
