We have to pay???? The embassy is not picking up the tab? To quote my English friends.....Bollocks!
The embassy does not put this event on. It is done by the American Colony Committee which is a private group. Up to a few years ago there was no admission charge as the sponsors picked up the entire tab which is in the neighborhood of $35,000. When the economy tanked many of those sponsors either withdrew or chopped the amount of their support.
If you have never attended this event you have no idea what a bargain the admission price is. Where can you get unlimited beer, hot dogs, bagels, cotton candy and more along with the the pride you feel as the U.S. Marine Corps honor guard raise "old glory" while the Univ. of Costa Rica band plays the Star Spangled Banner?
To me a bargain at ten bucks and nice to see something being done by citizens without "Big Brother" interfering.
