Holy sh*t! I just got my VIP and I've been checking out the photos. It looks like I'm going to stay at in San Jose for the duration of my trip  Would you guys suggest me continuing my stay at the Dunn Inn or move to the SL. Any help is greatly appreciated. I look foward to meeting some of you guys there as well.

Both are good places. SL puts you right in the action, but it may be booked. We all go hang at the SL anyway. Staying at the Dunn Inn just means you don't have to move your stuff. Glad you decided to stay. I'll be there on 3/3. If you have any questions, just ask.

I was checking out the VIP map and had a couple questions. How long would it take to walk to the Del Ray and Sportsman Lodge from the Dunn Inn? Also what are the cab prices back to the Dunn Inn from both. Thanks for all the help guys. This board is extremely valuable, 11 days and counting :P

Oh, you took me serious on the just ask part. :P It is best to keep the walking during the day and taxi at night. HDR or SL are a 10 min walk. Cabs during the day are on meter, less than 1K colones. DI to SL or HDR at night, I tell the driver 1K. HDR/SL to DI late at night, 1.5 to 2K. There is a bit of a surcharge at night. So in US terms, $1.5-$2 during the day and $3 - $4 at night.

Dean, regular marked cabs, not unmarked gypsy cabs are on the meter day and night. They are required by law to use it. Failure to do so can result in a suspension of their liscense to operate. Do they use the meter all of the time? Not if they think they can fool a dumb gringo. Is paying 4 dollars for a 1 dollar ride worth arguing over? Depends on how many cabs you plan to take. My advise is don't use the gypsy cabs unless you know how much you should pay then ask what they plan to charge. On marked cabs, flag one down that is moving, not one sitting outside the SL or especially the Del Rey, then ask them to use the meter. If they don't start the meter, tell them to pull over and get out. From the Dunn Inn, have the guard flag down a cab for you. If you want to give the guard a tip for doing this for you several times, he makes $2 or $3 per hour and would appreciate the gratuity.

Now, let's not leave out the maria equipped and functioning cab that has that little switch on the maria to speed it up.....about this I do not lie......some cabs have a jacked up meter such that the driver throws a switch and that maria starts really moving.....beware......they ARE out there.....LOTS of them.....

A metered cab ride from the Del Rey to Sportsmen's Lodge in the day should not exceed 600C. 8)

Also, MexiBob....it's ALWAYS best to give directions in Spanish rather than saying a Hotel name. If you just give the hotel name, you're likely to get driven all over hither and yon.....keep a couple of the hotel cards (both the Dunn Inn and the Sportsmen's Lodge) as I believe those have directions in Spanish on them.

Sportsmens Lodge se encuentra a 200 metros oeste de la rampa del hospital Calderon Guardia y 25 sur, calle 13 entre Av.9 y Av.11 casa 949 en barrio Otyoa

I can't find directions for the Dunn Inn on their web site. Give them a ring and have them email directions in Spanish. I'm sure Boyd will help you out. Toll Free: 1-800-545-4801

Now going to the Del Rey .....It's a bit different and you can tell the cab driver you want to go to the Del Rey. Leaving the Del Rey to go back to Dunn Inn: Follow Pop's advice above AND DO NOT take a cab that is in front of the Del Rey and parked....they're the one's Pop's is noting you do not want. Rather, grab a cab that is on the street right out the door from the Blue Marlin Bar inside the Del Rey....you'll see this entrance/exit once you're there.....you can get a maria (metered) equipped cab on that street most any time of the night and day.....

Have fun and it's my suggestion you WRAP THAT RASCAL and play safe.....
