or would taking a netbook be a waste of energy? do i phones work down there? heading down next week. anyone up for shots?

I will say that every hotel that we recommend to stay at has good wi-fi. Do a search for SL, La Amistad, Clarion, Dunn, etc.

3G is currently not available, at least in cell phones, in CR. The network is being installed with a target date of late this year. ICE rarely meets their proposed start date so I would guess sometime in the spring before it is up and running.

The wifi signal in Amistad's room is pretty weak if you're far away from their wireless router.

I've learned to bring a short ethernet cable to connect. I'm pretty sure every room has a network jack. Works like a charm, nice fast connection.

i wont be wearing my arm out carring that netbook around.

As far as a Netbook goes if it has a wireless adapter, definitely bring it as most of the better hotels have wireless. As for the Iphone, if you feel you have to bring it, be for you sign up for an International data plan before you go and even with that be sure to turn off data roaming except when you actually want to download email, send a text or browse.

I took my Iphone to Mexico for four days and basically didn't touch the settings I had in the US (and did not get an Intl. Plan) and when I got back to the states I got a text from ATT to call them immediately. It seems that during those four days, I racked up a total of almost $900 worth of international roaming charges and all I did was read email. The international plans are pretty expensive too and with that my additional charges would have been about $120.

My suggestion, book a room at a hotel with wireless, take your netbook and load Skype.

TURN OF ALL EMAIL PUSH and DATA ROAM. Strictly us the free wifi for all email. You will get creamed on the costs. Unfortuately, Iphone does not have a replaceable SIM so you would have to use their plan at $1.99 per minute. Leave the net book at home use the Iphone with WiFi for data and email. Buy a cheap 1900mHz phone and replaceable SIM and buy the SIM in CR. You will pay pennies for the phone calls and your Email will be free.

3G is up and running. In fact I changed from my old TDMA to G3 about 2 months ago. I have had no problems in the central valley with reception but can not speak to the situation through out the country.

I'm sure you meant 1800Mhz, the band that ICE uses.

Motorola V180, V551, L6, L7 are all good options. (All but L6 are quad-band, L6 has 2 versions-one quad and one tri, but they both include 1800Mhz band)
