this is my first trip to the CR looking at spending one or two nights in SJ and the rest surfing in tamarindo. It sounds like the SL is the best place to go in SJ. any thoughts? or anybody going to be don there the same time.

Depends what you want and what you want to spend.
SL is a great party hotel set a little off the beaten path and within easy walking distance to a few MP's. Rooms are a good deal for a standard 59.00 and more for the new wing 89.00 and even more for the mansion wing. 119.00 Chicas gather in the courtyard and bar area "most" hours of the day and night it gets really good about 6pm til closing. If you want to stay downtown you could stay in the Del Rey which costs more, has chicas available "all" hours of the day and night with uncomfortable rooms but you step off the elevator and "next" is in your face. Personally I like the SL, less agressive chicas than DR, good deals to be had, and great guys, CRTers and others hang out there.
As for Tamarindo, the surf is ok, you'd be better off going to Playa Grande which is a short way up the coast from Tamarindo but Tamarindo is a cool place to party. You'll find some chicas there but nothing like San Jose regarding P4P. Small Casino where P4P hangs out at night and you can find some fun in the clubs. Diria Beach Resort is a nice place to grab a drink in the beach chici bar, but I don't know the rules for chicas there. The hotel I stayed at (forgot the name) didn't allow us to bring back dates but the chica had an apartment so it wasn't an issue. Long drive to Tamarindo so if you're not sold on it, consider an alternative. You can get to Jaco in half the time, have great surf in Hermosa (15 min away) and good nightlife with some Discos and the Famous Beatle Bar. Wed and Sat go to backyard bar in Hermosa for a good time with regular and pros mixed together. If you're flying, it doesn't matter. Anyway, hope this helps a little, good luck and enjoy.
Pura Vida,
Jac
