Last year I was in Medellin for Christmas and New Years. The two years before I was in SJ, it was the same for me in both places. All of the days I stayed in both places were fine except New Years Eve, nothing anywhere. Rainman was freaking out and burned up 3000 cell phone minutes to no avail, New Years Eve seems like a bigger family day that Christmas or Christmas day. In Medellin most of the barrio streets were blocked off and all hell was breaking loose in there, probably much the same in SJ since I really didn't go driving thru the barrios in either of my Christmas times there.

i personally like to go toward the end of the month to help pay some rents.
watch out for holidays and any official government stuff going on, elections etc.
as stated, xmas/ new years is family time and may be a little slower then normal.
early december is a great time, xmas is coming and extra $$ is needed, if you get my drift.
