Does anyone know of anything special going on in San Jose the weekend leading up to Mardi Gras?

Will be there the weekend just prior to Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday", 3/5) and thought it sounded like a good excuse for a party. I'm planning to bring beads just in case!

This is probably much more of a New Orleans thing, but with Costa Rica being predominantly Catholic, the locals may want to do like their NOLA counterparts and do their partying before Lent. And if the beads have the same allure to the Ticas, this could be fun!

Actually no.

However Semana Santa (the Holy Week - this year 14 - 20 April) itself is a very big deal in Costa RIca. Nowadays it's more of a vacation - a time to either travel or spend time with family, so San Jose and the tourist areas can be dead.

There's a Carnival in Puntarenas in February 8-18 February (they skipped two years) but Lent doesn't start until 6 March.

There's some local one day "Mardi Gras" themed events in various communities (maybe) but it's about like the 4th of July as far as Ticos are concerned.

And most Catholic Ticos are about as Catholic as Governor Cumo - as in, not even pretending.
