When in La Fortuna make sure to go to a restaurant called Restaurante & Pizzeria La Parada for decent food at resonable prices. There are plenty of higher priced places to eat but we found ourselves enjoying the food and saving the money for other things, instead of getting gringo bashed for mediocre food. Also Baldi Hot Springs has a decent deal for all day use of their hot springs and pools. Food there is not cheap so we took our own and rented a locker for about 6.00 for the day. IT was big enough for a purse and 2 K*ds/ 2 adults clothes while we were in our swim gear. Towel rental was a 10.00 deposit and you can take your towel back as many times as you want for a dry one then get your 10.00 back when you leave.
Also in the area are Cavernas de Venados which I highly reccommend if you are adventurous the K*ds and fiance had a blast and never knew such things existed in costa rica. They have a pool you are welcome to swim in afterwards but it is not heated so depending on the weather it can be cool but we managed to hang out for over an hour after our tour of the cave.
