CR Virgin - Newbie!

I'll be making my first trip to CR on July 31.

I have two questions:
1) will anyone be at the the HDR those nights? I'd appreciate making some friends and learning about San Jose from you if so.

2) how safe are the cabs at night? And can you get a cab at all times of the day and night?

Read everything you can read in the newbie forum. I will be in SJ , 29 THRU 2, Might be able to connect at HDL..
