And no it is not "when do they stop selling liquor"

I know about the various activities planned, like the Sexy Bitch tour, Pre SB and SP parties and I have every intention of attending them but how does the lack of liquor sales effect mongering? Are the BM, KL and DR still open? Are the casinos and MP's aloud to operate?

I
I didn't see anyone asking these questions so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks,
X

First let me say I have never been here in an election so this is not based on my experience but rather what I have been told and common sense. Disclaimer: like all political process "common sense" does not necessarily work.

The primary reason for the ban on alcoholic beverages during the final election days function is prevent alcohol induced violence.

MP's and casinos are not primarily dispensers of alcohol so they should remain open.

The Hotel Del Rey is a hotel so it will be open.

The KL & BM, I would think, will close as there revenue is derived from their bar sales. They do close during the dry spell associated with Semana Santa.

Hopefully someone on the board who has first hand experience will post some information for you.

I have been told that bars will have their liquor locked up.....by the authorities. So the Blue Marlin, Key Largo etc will be closed. The Hotel part of Del Rey will be open. Zona Blue, a hotel (not cigar bar), New Fantasy and all MP's will be open. Strip clubs will be closed since they are bars.
This is not a 48 hr ban on sex just liquor sales.

I was there last election...KL at that point was not DR property...so I am not sure of the status then...BM was open (no liquor) but we brought our own, and the bartender's supplied the mixers. Small cooler with beer, and pocket flasks were quite a hit with the girls!

I was there during elections approx. 2 years ago. It was terrible, the whole city shut down. The whole thing started the night before the elections. Word was that bars would stop serving licor at midnight. A friend and I were drinking at KL until 1 am than police walked in and locked up the licor - pretty wild, felt like prohibition. The whole weekend the town was dead - including KL & BM. We spoke with a cap driver who brought us to an Italian restaurant that sold us 2 bottles of wine. DON'T GO THERE DURING ELECTIONS!

By the way, anybody knows when the next elections will take place? I will be in SJ in February and would hate to have this experience again - I get freaking nervous if I don't drink.

By "next election", do you mean the next one after Feb 5th, 2006? Don't know, sorry.

Must have been some sort of local election as Presidential elections are every 4 years so the last one was in 2002. I lived here two years ago and do not remember any great disruption then off course I rarely go to San Jose on a Sunday.

The next countrywide election will be in March, only should a runoff election be needed, to elect the new President.

I usually council with a bottle of "Flor de Cana" and it works out great. All this shaking stops right away. :D
