When traveling in CR by means of taxi is it normal to sit in front or in back?

I know its not really an important question, but still Ive seen it different around the world and some places take it personal. I remember hopping into the front of a cab in New York at the airport and I got the craziest look ever, but back home I always ride up front.

Meh just fill me in haha.

When I am alone, I always ride in front. The drivers don't care.

The one thing they DO care about is to gently close the door. They go nuts if you slam the door. I guess gringos are used to American cars with heavy doors as taxis.

I always prefer to ride up front with the driver. Since many of them don't know where the hell they're going it's easier to give directions that way and when I'm in the front I can make sure they turn on the meter (la maría) before we take off.

Well, you guys know we all have to think safety first! When I travel alone I always sit up front. Cabbies could care less. In fact, I think they like it that way. Easier to converse. But, one of the most widely practiced methods for robbery is to have someone hiding in the backseat. When you get in the front, they knock you out and rob you. I know a guy who lives near me here in the states that had that happen to him in CR.

Frankly, I don't know if he was in a regular cab or a pirate. But, better to be safe than sorry. And, never be under the assumption that taxistas are all upstanding citizens. Geez...didn't mean to throw cold water on the thread. Such a simple question and I've got to make it difficult. Anyway, be careful out there and sit where you want. Most of them don't care.

This has occurred in San Jose but it is an extremely rare occurrence and is not something I worry about. If you are concerned ride in the back at night during the day you can see in the back of the cab so take a look and hop in the front.

If you want to chat, ride in the front.

If you're taking a taxi: always travel with a chica and sit in the back seat. This will optimize your mongering time. You can spend the 5 or 15 or 20 minutes holding hands, flirting, and kissing.

That's my take...
