When I call this girl from the states with my calling card or my home phone it picks up and a voice in spanish and english says "this number will not accept international calls". Has anybody found a way around this.

It is her home phone as she does not have a cell.

Thanks,

Todobien

Todobien.....

I never had that problem. I use an MCI card that I bought at Costco and the calls always go right through. Cost is about 25 cents per minute.

Todobien....

I thought some more about that. It sounds like it may be some special phone company service that she subscribes to, like call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, long distance block, etc., etc. Maybe she has forgotten she even has it.

There are two different levels of phone service in Costa Rica.

NATIONAL: only can accept and make calls within Costa Rica.

INTERNATIONAL: can make and accept calls worldwide.

Most chicas rent the place they live and the majority of landlords will only have national service phones. They have learned the hard way that the tenant will move out without notice and then they get a huge phone bill without any means to collect it from the former tenant.

It is important to understand the phone service is in the name of the owner not the tenant in CR.

Ding Dong is right on the money. In the apartments I have had I had to arrange with the landlord to get to accept international calls. Seems like collect calls can be made that way and end up sticking the landlord with the bill. Internet calls would probably be a way around it, or those calling cards you get online. I think that works since it's treated as a local call. I think ...

Thanks guys - Good info, it does make sense in regards to collect internat calls. - I was definitely hoping to get around it.

I did try a calling card that I got in the states but no go.

Can you give me some more direction on the calling cards you are thinking of.

Thanks a lot.

If I come up with a way around I'll post it.

DD...is this for home phone service only? My chica used to have international calling on the cell phone but not anymore. However, she has no problem accepting the incoming calls from me. I use a calling card from www.nobelcom.com and I think it costs about 8 cents/minute to cellular phones.

Cell phone service works slightly differently. They can be programmed with no International service, to receive only or to receive and make International calls

Many of the chicas have cell phone service in their name unlike their home phone which is in the landlords name. They have international calling ability on the phone in their name and have the responsibility for the bills.

DD...I have another question for you regarding cellphones. I've never been able to get a straight answer on this one. I've been to CR probably 15 times and still can't figure out how cellphone owners are charged for their monthly bill. By that I mean, are they charged by the minute? Are they charged for incoming calls to the cell. Since my chica is not able to make international calls I just have to wonder why the ph*ck is her cell bill so outrageous every month? I could understand it when international calling was available on the phone but, now it is not. I'm sure ICE doesn't have any "rate plans" like we do here. Can you enlighten me?

That is one of the great mysteries of female life style that we will never be able to comprehend.

I use my cell phone very sparingly and pay about $8.00 per month which includes the basic service charge ( first 60 minutes free), 911 charge and the 13% sales tax. Every chica I know who has a cell phone has a bill in excess of $50.00 every month.

My understanding is that the charges are levied only on the phone that makes the call. This is not true for land lines just cell phones. Chicas seem to talk incessantly and they get these high bills.

ICE does not offer various calling plan options as in the US. You pay the basic fees and per minute after the first free 60 minutes.

ID is right on.

I offered my girls landlord $25,000 colones a month to allow her own apartment and he had to say no. This was after he met me and spoke with me for quite a few months. It would of saved me at least that much in long distance calls.

Most of these landlords have been burned so many times, they just don't do it for anyone....

Who knows, maybe he was holding out for a cien from me ?????

I use calling cards from the US to call Costa Rica, both home and cell. Calling into a cell here doesn't cost the recipiant. Cell phones are cheap here if not used excessively. Rates on minutes on calling cards vairy greatly. If there is a hispanic population with small stores in your area there are several cards that offer rates about 10 cents per minutes available there for Central America. Easy communication can be had with a computer and Yahoo Messenger. I put $25 on the account and talked with my novia twice a day for three months, at times for thirty minutes to an hour and I had more than $10 left when I returned to Costa Rica.
