Hola,
After many hours of reading posts I still have a question. I see many references to "cien" as well as $60, 40, etc. as well as $30K colognes, etc.
Do I understand this to mean that you can pay the ticas with either american cash OR colognes?
Thanks

That would be correct. You go to many if not all the massage parlors and they are gonna quote you colones though.. The chicas in the DR will take it any way you want to give it.

I have found that I get a better deal if I deal strictly in Colonnes. Except for the real hardcore chicas a lot of them dont have a good grasp on exchange rates. They may ask for $70 but if you counter with 30000C they may agree even though its only about $62.

The chicas prefer to be paid in gold bullion, but will accept dollars or colones, or a combination of both (although I think that's kind of ghetto).

Have to disagree a little here. In my experience almost all the BM chicas have a better grasp of the dollar/colones exchange rate than the average gringo tourist.

Reguarless of country even if it is just across the Mexican border in Juarez where I go sometimes.I pay in local currency. You almost always get a better deal in local currency but is is important to know the conversion and what you ar negotiating for.A good rule of thumb at the moment is that 10000 colones is just over $20.I pay for everything in colones and you will definitely get a better deal at massage places in about any outher country. To me it is also a matter or respect to pay for things in the currency of the country I am in.rbc100

It will become much easier to convert once the colone depreciates to 500/USD. It's about 482 right now.

10,000 col will be exactly $20.

But for those of you who have a lot of trouble converting col to dollars, here's a quick and simple thing that I do. It's a very easy rule of thumb.

***Just take the number of colones you are converting double it and drop the last 3 zeros. This will give you an approximate dollar amount. The reverse is easy too. Take the number of dollars you are converting, half it and add 3 zeros. Once the exchange rate is exactly 500/$, this will be an exact conversion method.***

TO CONVERT COLONES TO DOLLARS:

10,000c... 10,000 X 2 = 20,000... drop 000... approx. $20 (exactly $20.74)

35,000c.... 35,000 x 2 = 70,000.... drop 000.... approx $70.

TO CONVERT DOLLARS TO COLONES:

$40... 40 / 2 = 20... add 000... 20,000c

$100... 100 / 2 = 50.... add 000... 50,000c
