New to CR geography. Jaco doesn't seem that far from Quepos on map. How long is the drive or is it better to fly? Can you get a shuttle ride? |

Quepo from Jaco is about a 40-50 minute ride and it's pretty scenic. I'ts not possible to fly from Jaco to Quepos. You can fly from San Jose to Quepos though, it taked like 20 minutes as opposed to the 1 1/2- 2 hr drive from SJO to Jaco. |

Marlin, If you don't mind traveling like a local, there are public buses that run between Quepos and Jaco. I don't have my links handy, but PM me and I'll send you the web address of the bus schedules. I'm not certain, but I think that Transportes Morales runs that route; you can also travel from San Jose to Quepos on one of their four daily buses for around U.S. $5.00 each way. A taxi from Quepos to Jaco or vice-versa will cost around $20.00; the local bus fare should be around $3.50. Rising fuel costs are being reflected in higher cab fares and bus tickets, so my numbers may be incorrect. Be sure to negotiate with the cab driver before getting into the cab, as drivers on the Pacific coast typically do not use taximeters. Despite the scary iron bridges, the road between Quepos and Jaco is very good. And the scenery is quite nice. As you travel between Jaco and Quepos, you'll pass other beaches, including Hermosa. Lodgings are available in the smaller beach towns for less than $15.00, if you can deal with the tico standard of living. Hope this helps. |

I fly every time I drive between Jaco and Quepos. ![]() As in most developing countries most air, bus and rail routes run to and from the capital as nation's traffic hub. In the case of Quepos, since the most practical and common route is around the mountains, one normally has to pass through Jaco if they go by road. If one is going to Quepos from SJ, the 20 minute airflight makes a practical if a bit more expensive alternative to the 3 hour drive. If one is going from Jaco to Quepos, bus or car are by far the most practical. The 2-2.5 hour drive from SJ to Jaco descends down scenic but twisty roads often slowed by long lines of traffic. Shortly before Jaco the road flattens and opens up and between Jaco and Quepos its a straight shot down smooth roads through palm oil groves. The road used to be a rough gravel one, but the last time I was there it was finished all the way down to the last iron bridge right before town, but that should be done by now too. One should always call updated bus schedules since they can change from whatever has been posted on-line but the link I use to get an idea is http://www.costaricareisen.com/info/busse_eng.htm. Transportes Morales (223-5567) does seem to be the one to cover SJ>Jaco>Quepos. Though that link did not list any scheduled service between Jaco and Quepos, I imagine it must exist as the indirect bus between SJ & Quepos must at the very least stop on the main road just outside of town as it passes by. |

A better choice for bus schedules is: http://thebusschedule.com/cr/index.php Tested the link and used live data on the site. |

Gray Line is cheaper than a private taxi, but I was surprised to see it is $35, which is the same rate from San Jose to MA or Quepos. Haven't priced a taxi in a while, but I know it is around $80 from Jaco to Puntarenas, so I would guestimate about $70. It's a short enough hop to save the money and take a regular bus. Or just give me a shout. haha I'm almost always up for a drive to MA for the day to get out of town. Just pay for the gas...... ![]() |
