Ok newbies... I very seldom post on this board, but as I will be in CR yet again for the 4th straight summer, I thought I would offer my assistance, because I know what it's like as a first timer. Those newbies who need a good tour guide and translator free of charge (well what's a couple of Pilsen's at Key Largo) can reply and I will get back to them. (I know what your all thinking but I'm a student, but my knowledge for a couple of beers is reasonable, huh?)

I am in CR from early May to late Aug, in my mid 20's, speak above average Spanish, and my buddies won't come for a visit ("CR can't be as good as Daytona Beach") and I need to speak English occasionally.

CP1436,

I'm glad to see that you are taking an initiative to help out other newbies. I hope to see you post more often and offer your opinion from the 20's something group of guys. It would be good to hear a wide range of perspectives about our hobby in CR.

Whats up CP, glad to hear that you are willing to help some of us noobies out, and that I am not the only guy in his mid 20's that travels there or is intrested in traveling there. I'm getting ready to take my first trip this summer and am very nervous and excited. I haven't put in my vacation request yet, as I am researching to see if there is a best time to go this summer. I'm also still trying to decide between CR and DR, right now I'm leaning toward CR, but I will certianly let you know if I will be there the same time as you.

AAA,

I have spent about the same amount of time in both CR & DR . If it's your first trip and your going it alone either place is great,Be careful in the DR I had issues with 2 ladies there and a friend of mine had is wallet lifted right out of a club.
Good luck and be safe.

I'll be visiting CR for the very first time for a poker tournament at Casino Europa. I'll be staying at the Morazon so I'd be happy to pop over to the BM and buy you a couple of beers.
Seeing as I may well be alone on this trip (at least initially heh)
it would be cool to meet some new folks.

This will be my first time also, and have the same sense of excitement that the others have stated. I'll be doing Spanish school by morning and having fun the rest of the day during the 1st half of June. CP1436, if you're at the JK or DR, or any other bar in town, I'd like to say hello and buy you a drink.

Gentlemen,
Hope this is the correct forum. Debating 1st time trip to Costa Rica this summer June -Sept. Questions for some veterans. Any responses would be most appreciated:
-What's the best time of the year to go to CR? I heard it was Nov-April.

-Do most of the Ticas migrate back to South America or Europe during the summer months or is CR a year round happening place?

-Does CR have reverse seasons from North America? Are our summers up North consider down months for tourist season?

-Does it rain non stop during summer months? If so is it torrential non-stop or is it like Hawaii (in and out then back to sun)?
-Can you drink the tap water in CR and not get sick or is it like Mexico where it's contaminated?
Thanks

Genjad55,

You double posted. Naughty, naughty.

:(

1. Summer in C.R. = rainy season. That means two-four hours of rain every afternoon. Unless you're doing outdoor activities, this shouldn't be a problem.

2. Tap water in San Jose is perfectly safe to drink and not bad tasting. If you're concerned, bottled water is widely available.

PM me with other questions. If I don't have the answers, I'll try to point you somewhere or to someone from whom you can find the info.

A word to any newbies reading this thread: Please, please do your homework before asking the same questions that have already been asked a dozen times!

:!:
The search function works very well, and doing some research in advance will probably answer any of your questions. Having said that, most guys here are very willing to hehlp out a newbie/rookie, but no one wants to nursemaid guys who are too lazy to do a bit of homework first.

Welcome to C.R.T., amigo...and here's hoping that your first C.R. trip will be everything you hope it will be.

Any time of the year is good. Nov - Apr is most popular as it is "Summer" but that only means that there is less rain in the central valley. The rest of the year round, you will see rainfall in the afternoons or evening sometimes heavy.

There's plenty of girls all the year round.

That's the high season. Thinsg are a little more relaxed during the rest of the year. Better deals can be had in lodgings, and it isn't as crowded.

Ticas are Costa Rican women, so they live there. The greatest migration that happens is sometimes between San Jose and the beach. Some holidays have an effect on the population, but over all, there are plenty of ladies around all of the time in SJ.

CR has two main seasons, rainy and dry. They consider the dry season to be Summer, and it is from sometime in December through sometime in the NA Spring. The temperature varies some, but over all, in San Jose, the high for the year is about 85F and the low for the year is about 57F. Most places do not need either heat or AC, as long as they get a breeze.

non-stop or is it like Hawaii (in and out then back to sun)?

If you mean NA Summer, it is typical to have it be sunny until around noon, when the clouds start rolling in. It is typical to have about an hour of rain, often quite heavy, around 3PM. The sun goes down at around 5:30 all year, so it doesn't turn into a steambath after the rain. This is typical weather, though every year is different.

I consume some San Jose water, but often also get a bottle that I keep in the fridge for drinking. Drinking beer with ice is very common in CR, and the ice is made with tap water in SJ. A friend with a farm near Orotina always brought SJ tap water with him because he didn't trust his well.

My responses apply to the San Jose area. They do no pretend to cover the entire country. I hope this helps.
