I apologize knowing that cell phone and cell phone plans have been discussed already. I did a search and found a lot of out of date information, so trying to start new.

Travelling down there in about a month for multiple items. No.1 will be travel to Grecia area to look for either a place to rent until I buy, and also to look for a place to buy. I use verizon in the US, and know I have that as a possibility. However for the first while I am looking to buy a burner phone that will mainly be used when out checking out another feature that sounds good in Costa Rica. One that if I loose the phone no big deal, But do not want to expose some of the things that may be searched on the phone, not necessarily want on my main phone. Are there recommendation on current phones available there on a monthly cell service. Also, recommendations on which cell phone company would be recommended. I plan on staying at the SL for 2-3 days before going up to Grecia. Any recommendations decent phones and plans. I think it will be first or second week in August for me to travel down and start hunting for a few different answers.

Thank You for any replies.

Bob

Grab pretty much any unlocked phone and pick up a simm once you arrive. I have been using Movistar for years.

Movistar is now Liberty.

Kolbi used to be the best hands down and up till a couple of years ago I would agree. I do travel all over the country and would have service when other carriers would drop signals. My wife uses Moviestar and she now gets service in areas where I drop mine. Come to find out Kolbi is in financial trouble and I have a feeling that is the cause for the service constricting. I switched to Moviestar after 10 years with Kolbi in January 2022.

What the article says about no longer being able to buy a sim card near baggage claim @ sjo is not correct. There is a Claro booth to the left of the baggage carousels just before you get to the x-ray machines. It was there 9 days ago.

Will be glad when I get down there and get it all taken care of. Good information from all for me to take it in. Will be interesting when I get down there and actually get to experience all that Costa Rica has to offer. Before coming back north, hope to have a long-term place to call home down there. I am sure it is going to be a sharp learning curve. On a whole lot of different areas.

Does anyone know if I can get a local/prepaid e-sim yet? I know I can get coverage through pricey 3rd party apps, but I would particularly like to get on Liberty and maybe Kolbi directly — maybe both since I will be in and out of the jungle for a good part of my trip.

I have been experimenting with their apps but I need to use Google Translate and I seem to always get hung up by them asking for my phone number. How do I get a phone number, if I don't already have a phone number?

I'm thinking I have to go to a store, but if e-sim still isn't available then I'll just go with the 3rd party before I depart for CR. Alternatively, I have an unlocked dual sim backup phone from 2019 that I could use. Since my new phone is e-sim only, I am a bit concerned about trying to use my WhatsApp on a second phone unless I can get a burner Costa Rica WhatsApp number I suppose.

Any advice is appreciated!
