Post subject:  A few weeks out from my first trip. Have a few questions...
I apologize if these are posted elsewhere, I've read a ton of the forums and it's kinda blending together.

1. Phone service, I use metro pcs. They are on the t-mobile network. Has anyone successfully used metro pcs down there?

2. I see local currency in thousands, but alot of descriptions say millions. They are just meaning thousands right?

3. I see SL closes the bar at like 9 or 10pm. Are most bars closing that early? Are there things to do after that at other places?

4. I want to hit a strip club while I'm there. I like the idea of buying a 10 drink for a gal and having her on my lap for a few songs, then on to the next girl. Does anyone know what strip clubs are open with covid? And which ones would be best?


I'm sure ill think of a few more question between now and when I leave. Thanks for any help.

1. No, and Metro blocks the phones, I'm no tech guy but you can buy a local chip and minutes and put it in your phone while you're here.

2. "Mil" does not mean millions, it's Spanish for thousand. Currently $1 is around 1,650 "mil".

3. I don't know, I live here and find plenty mischief in the daytime. If you want action late, pick a girl at SL at closing time, or get an MP girl's cell and get her to come late and negotiate overnight or several hours.

4. Somebody else can help you here, I've lived here multiple years and have visited since 2003 and never visited a strip club, most are over priced and the drunker you get, the easier it is to rip you off good...and most will... :x

Watch for Claro booth when arriving at airport, they are along the way out. You can get a chip for under $20 and they will install it for you.

I've read in another CRT thread all strip clubs are closed due to COVID and the curfew. Maybe one of the local CRTers can confirm this?

1. I got a Google Fi sim card for my trip there. Its $20 + what ever amount of data you use - Calls and messages are free international. I was there about 6 days and spend approx 2.5GB which cost me the $20+25for the data. You can order a sim package for free when signing up at (https://fi.google.com)

3. Yes there is a curfew. I stayed at the Taormina Hotel, their restaurant was closed at 5PM and the bar closed at 8PM. I rented a car, and the car rental place told me that there is no driving curfew for tourists in rentals or taxis.

4. I believe the strip clubs are closed but could be wrong. I decided strip clubs would be too high risk so I stayed away

download a currency converter app; you can easily calculate things then. I use "XE" currency converter.

Since sounds like first time visiting; other apps I suggest downloading before you get here:

1)WhatsApp (I use a google voice number as my Whatsapp #, I don't suggest using your main number to keep yourself anonymous). this is the app most locals use to communicate.

2) Google Translator(unless you fully speak Spanish)

3) Waze app (I find them the most accurate here vs google or apple maps (I have an Iphone))

4) Uber; though illegal here...commonly used. However as an FYI, they don't do service after curfew and getting close to curfew it starts to get hard to get a ride.

Even better, download the WAZE app. It exists :lol:

Also, for those who keep asking for outdated MP maps, wait until you get here and search Waze or Uber for "massage" or "pension" and you will get most of them. I prefer Waze because it shows you real time traffic conditions.

Here are the current exchange rates. You will convert dollars to colones at the bid not the ask, similar to stocks. It is currently 608 colones per dollar based on Friday 4/9/2021 BCR (Bank of Costa Rica) rates. They change daily. When you exchange colones for dollars it will cost you 615 to buy a dollar. The banks make the 7 colone spread. Credit card international exchange rates work the same but the spread is usually greater although some do not charge you. Those Cambios at the airport have a 16% spread and are total ripoffs. Don't ever use them. An ATM is usually a better option.
