Don't forget to go to Target and buy one of their cool shirts that have their logo on it. The less you let your self be seen doing anything in CR that involves items that are small, valuable and easily stolen the better. It does seem like no matter where you go there are eyes watching you trying to figure out how to extract your gringo dollars. I have traveled up to the Nicaragua border looking to buy gold from the illegal miners in the area, and 4 wheeled back into areas that were so remote, you would be lucky to ever have your body found should something happen to you. From my experiences, I would have to say buying gold in Costa Rica is not the smartest venture you can undertake. Buy it from a reputable bullion dealer and be safe. The miners I met were all amalgamating the superfine gold with mercury then burning it off in open air, not very smart and certainly not good for the environment. The prices they were getting were insane as you did not know what the actual gold content was, my guess, 18-22 karat but the gold still had mercury in it which adds significant weight and issues with refining. |

thanks for the advice, I contacted the company above and they have high premiums for basic coins, it is cheaper to buy them in the UK, also the exchange rate makes it worse. Also agreed I don't want to be jumped as I come out of the shop! |
