Post subject: | Why not always use uber? |
When I visit tijuana, mexico I always use uber since it's about 1/3 rd the cost of taxis usually. Not sure why I don't see much discussion of people using uber in san jose, cr on here, am I missing something? Obviously the cabbies are probably not thrilled about uber in San Jose (which from my understanding is the only city in CR that utilizes uber) so has anyone experienced any danger from angry cabbies while using uber? And I realize metered red cabs around downtown to and from places is so cheap that ubers might be more of a hassle in some cases to flag them down or find them if they're not plentiful but for me it would seem easier to just use uber off my smartphone (I have google fi so it should work in san jose,) instead of exchanging money each time etc. Thanks in advance to any replies. |

1. Google's Project Fi does indeed work in San Jose (my US cell carrier) and most of the 'tourist areas" (apparently uses either Movistar or Claro or both but not Kolbi). 2. Mi novia and I use Uber extensively (her friends do too). It works fine. Amazingly, due to the nature of the Uber nav app for drivers, Uber drivers increasingly know the streets as opposed to the 'from the Walmart, 100 meters north' directions Ticos normally use. 3. You can use Uber outside SJ. Alajuela for instance. 4. There have been several incidents in San Jose of violence. In one case taxistas blocked a female Uber driver and shot at her. When you are by yourself ride up front (looks less Uber that way). I also had an Uber driver turn his phone screen off when passing through an area where there were a lot of taxistas (northwest of the downtown Holiday Inn) so as not to attract their ire. |

Good thing they have in Uber in Costa Rica. More convenient for travelers like me. |

For longer trips, especially to and from the airport I would definitely use uber. For shorter jaunts around the gulch and nearby barrios, I wouldn't bother since the fares are so cheap. With the traffic situation in downtown San Jose I would imagine you might do a bit of waiting for a non-scheduled uber, In most places the red taxis are plentiful and the ride is immediate. |

I am a big fan of uber but not sure about them picking people up at the airport. Only the orange taxis are allowed to do that. To catch a regular red taxi at the airport you would have to walk out to the street. Uber seem to be all over now, plenty in the cartago area. |

I can imagine how pissed a cab driver would be if they knew what you were doing, lol |

Col. I think you mean uber will pick you up outside the cafe on the same street you come out of 'ARRIVALS" not departures. |
