I find 2 items useful on my trips to CR.
1. A bottle opener - if you purchase Cervesa's in a market most need an opener.
2. A shower cap for the young ladies to use- allows them to re-enter the marketplace or return home without announcing to the world what had just transpired.

You can buy a pack of 15 shower caps at Walmart for less than $2. I always have them during my travels.
Another thing I always take is a wash cloth. Very few hotels have wash cloths.

For the over packers out there, are there any items people would recommend not to bring along?

I agree about light packing. Makes things easier in a lot of ways. I bought an eddie bauer backpack today, that's going to be used for my first trip to CR ( probly 3 day trip ) as my only bag.
One of the ways it makes it easier, is being able to sit down on the plane and then leave immediately too.. since you're putting it on the floor underneath you.

Just need to get access to an iron in the room, to iron the rolled up shirts, and you're good ( or look up inventive ways of un-wrinkling without an iron, on youtube ).

I do like this thread and the extra tips regarding bottle opener ( but the TSA might be dicks and not allow you to leave with depending on where you fly from ).. and the wash cloths, etc..

I like the idea of using only a carry on but keep in mind many items that the TSA in the US allows can be confiscated by the security people at CR airport on your way back. One such is a tiny folded up umbrella. Even your razor. Be prepared to leave things behind.

Agree, there is nothing that a few extra Ben's will not cure.

Also, read every newbie thread in how to behave/do in CR. I even when back and re-read Orange threads and many others just to refresh my memories for CR.

I just got my 7 year itch since my last CR trip and went ahead and booked a flight. I want to see how CR has changed since my last trip.
