From reading the boards I don't plan on leaving the DR at night although I was wondering is it safe to walk to the key largo say from 8-12?

Besides the no jewelry and leaving passport and cash in the safe, are there any other safety tips a newbie should be aware of?

Walking from the DR to KL is honestly a 30 sec walk and you will be fine to go there after dark. I stayed at the Presidente back in 2008 and 2009 and would take the 5 minute walk all the time at night (although I was with my wingman and usually with a girl or two) and never had any problems. I wouldn't go too far on foot after dark especially not alone...my advise to a newbie would be to take a cab. If you wear jewelry just tuck it in at night when you leave the DR...or don't wear it at all.

Thanks for the info. I plan to visit a few MP's i read good things about in the day time, taxi there and back. No need to tuck any jewelry in as I won't be bringing any.

Yes. HDR and KL are literally across the street from each other.

No sweat it is right there, just got to get by the peddlers of cigars, watches and etc.. but they won't hassle if you just keep walking, and a no, gracias does the trick.. also, the wall right there going to the KL is a nice place to sit, to watch the chicas going back and forth.

Thanks for the info I feel more comfortable walking to the key largo now

You are not "walking to it", you are just crossing a street. You are stepping out of the hotel door onto the sidewalk, and merely crossing the street into the parking lot of the Key Largo. There will be dozens of people (chicas, peddlers) around, so yer not going to get mugged in the 15 seconds it takes to exit one place and enter the other.

Put your cash in your fanny pack, keep your eyes peeled, have your mace at the ready, look around and ask security to escort you if you are overwhelmed.....
