I will be arriving SJO around 8:50 PM Tuesday January 24th. I have arranged to be picked up by the hotel I am staying at. SL.
From what I have found in the forums, the duty free shop will still be open. I plan on buying liquor for myself and the girls there. Should I exchange some money at the airport because of the late hour? I will be bringing some cash. Will the SL have an ATM that is better exchange? I should not need very much for this one night. Maybe one girl, if any are available at SL or DR, and breakfast / coffee Wednesday morning. I have read that the casino at the DR has a good exchange rate. However, I might need a taxi to get there.
Speaking of girls, any chance there will be many to choose from at the SL or DR that late on Tuesday night? I probably won't get checked in and room set up before 10:30 or 11:00. PM.
I look forward to posting about my trip when I return. This is not my first. However, it has been 20 years.

I wouldn't worry about exchanging money that night. Your ride, any girl you meet, and any meal you buy will accept American dollars. 10:30-11pm on a weeknight will probably not still be hopping with girls at the SL. There may be a couple still hanging out and all it takes is one good one so there is a chance. They close the bar around midnight there. There will be a larger selection at Del Rey.

Thanks Mako. I may just rest and get an early start Wednesday.

HDR does NOT give a good exchange rate.

The casino NEXT TO the HDR (The Colonial Casino) gives a good exchange rate, and it is open 24/7. Just go to the cashier at the Colonial Casino to exchange if you need to. Unlike exchanging at a bank, you do NOT need to have your passport to exchange at The Colonial.

Try to avoid using the taxis that park outside of any hotel door. They overcharge for the ride. It's better to walk to a nearby corner and hale a moving taxi.

8:50 sounds like you are flying Southwest from Houston. there will be plenty of chicas at the Del Rey. It should be a 1,000 colones or $2 taxi ride from SL to Del Rey. Bring some small bills and the taxi drivers will probably try to charge you 2,000 colones or $4 on the way back if you have a chica.

Actually a metered taxi from Avendia 9 to the HDR should be about 6-700 colones. I go down to Ave. 9 to catch a taxi (or catch one up by La Amistad).

Same with coming back. I walk up to the road along Parque Morazan or a bit down Ave 1.

I usually pay a mil (1000 colones) with tip.

Thanks Hank and MM3. I appreciate your input. Any and all info helps! Glad to hear there will be girls available at HDR. I can exchange some money at the casino next to HDR at that time. Also, how not to get screwed by the cabbies.

Hi all, and sorry for this silly question. I read that we are not supposed to walk outside at night, but from the SL to the HDR is about 600m (6 blocks or so). Do we really need a cab ride for such a short distance? Is it that dangerous? Thanks

I've walked it in the evening (up to 8ish) and never felt threatened (except trying to cross Ave. 3), but I'd recommend a group or a cab.

The TV "chicas" at Ave. 9 and Calle 11 (the Paseo de Argentina between the INS and the Yellow House) are always a hoot.

Reminds me of my 1st question to the membership when I was a Newbie, "Is it dangerous to walk from the DR to the KL?" Boy did I get flamed on that one! LOL!

Reception at SL will exchange money, but i am not sure of the rate and how long that front desk is open and staffed.

Walking at night to and from DR you should be cautious and aware and not stumbling. I have walked it numerous times late night, looking back it was foolish but i kept my head on a swivel and walked with purpose. Not recommending it, just saying....

I wouldn't do it, at least not right away. Walk during the day and take a cab a couple of times at night so you see how it is. After that, you if think you can walk there after 9 pm, it's your call, but do a little recon first.

If you are staying at the SL, you will pretty much always find someone who's heading that way and split a cab or walk with him/them.

I agree with MM3, if you decide to walk there at night by yourself I can only give you one advice ; I don't care how pretty those girls in the street look from a far or how a couple of them want to lure you into a threesome for free in the back of an alley, don't do it.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Poobear. I just hope I can get someone to walk with me one night I am there. I would not walk alone. Being from the Houston area, I get a kick out of watching the show on Westhiemer in the Montrose area. I will say. Some of them are prettier than most of the girls I wind up with! LOL
