Looking through old threads it seems that the exit tax can also be bought at the 2nd floor bank at the INS building, and some casinos...

I was wondering if anyone has bought exit tax outside of the airport recently?.

I read a more updated post stating exit tax can only be bought at the airport... This is a bummer as I'd rather get the hell out of SJO and just knock out exchanging currency and buying exit tax with one trip to the bank.

It takes about 10 minutes to pay the exit tax. Having it prepaid in the airline tickets (of the participating airlines) has only marginally reduced the time dealing with the exit form at the airport.

My last 2 trips to the airport to leave the exit tax line was almost out of the airport and this was at 6am, so I would advise buying it at your hotel

Or use an airline that includes it.

2--best way is to pay when you arrive and exchange money at the same time

Unless this just changed recently, you CANNOT buy the exit stamp at SL any longer. I do not believe any place other than the airport sells them, and that airport desk is only open WHEN a departing flight needs it to be.

I thought that by now all the airlines were fazed into including it in the ticket price. Evidently not.

Thanks BD. I paid for my exit tax once at the SL, but that was 4 years ago.

I think almost all the airlines now include it in your ticket. All the majors as far as I know... but you should check your ticket / ticket invoice to be sure. Could check with the airline on the way in to be sure.

Spirit is pretty much the only one of any concern to this audience.

It's MUY TICO to do away with the payment of the exit tax but still need to fill out the form. My only guess is that they did it to prevent theft of the exit tax money.

Btw- anybody noticed Cubana airlines on the list? Like many of the cars in Cuba, the planes are also from the 50's and 60's. The fleet consists mostly of old Russian pieces of shit that are sitting death traps. Nothing like 70's avionics technology. I think they fly using the sun and stars for direction.

Ever flown in Russia? The planes are decently maintained, I would say on par with everyone else. But they do some stuff ass-backwards. I boarded a plane in Krasnodar (walking out to the tarmac and up the steps). We were accompanied by flies that must have been shocked to exit 3,000 miles away from their home city.

They refueled the aircraft with the aircraft doors open. The smell was overwhelming. The doors remain open for ventilation, unlike our air-conditioned process. Upon takeoff, they 'power-brake' the aircraft, holding still while they bring the engines up to full throttle. Then they let off the brakes and the acceleration is unbelievable. They climb steep as well to get above the city quickly.

This looks like a Spirit ticket, so it's not included.

The $29 exit tax is comprised of 2 separate line items, a $2 Customs tax, and a $27 tax that goes towards, airport improvements, and helping end human trafficking and Ch*ld exploitation. Oh, and lining the pockets of corrupt politicians.
