Hi guys,

Let me start by saying that I have not had any meaningful vacation in over 5 years.

With that in mind, I am planning very carefully this vacation to be memorable for at least another five years.

I am targeting the end of September, beginning of October time frame.

I believe that I have narrowed down to stay at the La Amistad to take advantage of the all-inclusive package.

I also believe that I have a good feeling of normal excursions, like the volcano and hot springs and a catamaran trip to an island off the west coast out of Jaco.

I anticipate a full week (7 days), where 5 of those days are fully spent in CR. This can be extended.

So the questions.

For etiquette at LA, how does one bring in a tica, without causing a ruckus? Side door, straight thru the lobby?

Next, would it be beneficial to stay at least one night in Jaco?

Finally, any suggestions for activities or links to web pages are greatly appreciated.

First, become a VIP member here/

This has advantages (discounts, VIP area).

Routine at the LA - You walk up to the desk at the LA with your chica and she gives the desk clerk her cedula (ID) and then you go to your room (or get a drink or eat and then go to your room).

When you walk her out, she gets her cedula back.

Yup, already got the VIP. Waiting on the card.

I am doing as much research as possible, but it never hurts to get other's opinion.

Plus to enjoy properly, I do not want to be seen as a newbie, and try to follow any local customs.

For example, what is the procedure at MP and places like SL?

At an MP, you go into the sala and pick a girl, then discuss any 'extras', then pay (paying in colones is good), then go to a room and have at.

At the SL, you pick a chica, negotiate, and then take her back to the LA and pay her at the end.

Sometimes at the SL (and the HDR) the chica will approach you. Sometimes you make eye contact and she comes over. Sometimes you have to get her off her phone.

Negotiate everything up front. Pay at the end. Pay in whatever currency you negotiated in (pro tip - chicas normally think CRC 500 = $1 so CRC 50K = $100, but the exchange rate is about CRC 550 =$1 (bank rate) right now; so pay in CRC!).

And don't throw numbers around without specifying whether it's dollars or colones. Some interpret "80" in their own favor to mean 80,000 colones instead of $80.00.

If you think you will not be able to get away for at least 5 more years do yourself a favor and go to Mexico or somewhere else. The problem being that once you experience what CR has to offer you will never be able to put the Genie back in the bottle. I would be willing to bet before your boots return to US soil you are planning your next trip......... You Have Been Warned!!!!

And Pops would be at LA? or on the forum here?

Also, for everyone, besides SJ, what type of tourist type events?

Also, is it humid there, or just plain hot? Temperature wise, I know it is "hot" there already, just look at some of the pics. ;)

Pops is a forum member. Click the link and PM him.

It is not "hot" in the Central Valley / San Jose. In September / October it is the rainy season ('green season') in the Central Valley and the Pacific Coast.

This link explains it - but it's full of shit for the Caribbean Northeast.

That doesn't mean it will be raining all the time. it means that's the time of year when it does rain.

Going back to San Jose temperatures. Expect daytime temperatures in the upper 70s / low 80s and cool nights (low to mid 60s). The "warm" season is March-April and you'll be there in the cooler "cold" season (not that it is cold). Humidity is usually low.

Jaco is another story. Jaco averages 90s/70s and high humidity.

Of course, I'll be in the far Caribbean northeast where it's hot and humid all year long.

Wow.

Thank you all for the information. I will be taking into consideration everything.

Again, thank you all.

Any other advice is still greatly appreciated. Now that I think of it, what is recommended for clothing choices?

Since I will fly in on SouthWest, I would like to not check luggage if possible.

In addition to what MM3 posted:

For five days, catch up for the last five years by enjoying the companionship of the ladies. There are day trips to do various things, look at the brochures at LA and SL. I think LA still has the free ride to and from Jaco for guests staying as long as you are.

It rains a lot, so take an umbrella. It's also good to take a light jacket, especially if you plan to take a trip to a volcano. Sunday is the only day you should wear shorts outside the hotel, unless you are in Jaco.

In my opinion, the only pre-planning you should do is your flight and your hotel. Relax, you'll be on vacation, don't set a schedule.

LA includes laundry in the all-inclusive. You need a couple of pairs of light trousers, shorts, a t-shirt or two and a couple of collared shirts. Plus skivies, shaving kit, condoms*, (maybe good lube), a comfortable but not ratty shoes.

Don't expect nice hotel toiletries at LA. They have squeeze packets of Head & Shoulders and little soaps. Consider that.

Plus what ever you normally sleep in. And sandals / flip-flops if you are going to the beach.

I wear performance "fishing clothes" (because I work at a fishing lodge, duh!) - Columbia PFG Bahama II shirts, zip-off pants, UnderArmor skivies... but those are my work clothes too. The advantage is that they dry fast and don't stink.

*Bring lots of good condoms. Bring twice as many as you think you'll need. Put them where they won't disappear.

OK, again this is a treasure trove of great information.

Since I will be going during the "green" season, do you advise both sunscreen and bug repellent?

Keep in mind, in the USA, the CDC is starting to freak out over Zika.....

For trips of five nights, this is what I take:
Three pairs of jeans, one pair of causal pants
Six or seven shirts, polo style (roll them, makes packing very easy)
Seven pairs of socks and briefs (you may get caught in the rain)
Toiletries, 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less in a quart-size plastic bag
Good walking shoes, one pair in addition to what you are wearing (rain!)
Umbrella
Light jacket
Condoms
Finish filling your bag with chocolates (score points with the chicas and serving staff)

That may sound like a lot, but everything easily fits in a regulation size carry-on. I also have a small bag that I use for electronics, travel documents, pens, etc. It is classified as a personal bag, so no charge.

If you have a cheap smart phone, load Whatsapp on it. Most of the chicas use Whatsapp. Do not carry your expensive iphone or Samsung outside the hotel. It is not necessary to have a phone, but it is a convenience to contact any exceptional chicas you may meet. If you don't have a cheap phone, you can buy one on ebay for less than $50 (unlocked, quad band).
