Hi, Newbie to Costa Rica.

I am planning a mid July trip and plan on staying at the Sportsmens Lodge. There is a United Flight leaving at 1:05 AM. I was wondering how early I would need to be at the airport for that flight and are taxis a good option to get me there around 9 or 10 if possible?

Thanks,

Dean

There's a thread on recommended drivers. I use Vaije Garmendia through work. I know another.

A late / early flight like that - 2 hours should be good.

If you leave the SL by 10 pm, you should be fine. Do not cut the time too short. Some of the airlines will not allow you to check in if you arrive at the check-in counter less than an hour before scheduled takeoff. Standing in line does not count, you must be at the counter at least an hour before scheduled takeoff.

There are drivers at the SL. The receptionist told me late last year they charge $25 to take you to the airport. I have never used that service, so I don't know. If you plan to take a taxi, find a driver beforehand and arrange a time and a fare. By doing that, you can pick what you think is a good taxi, in good condition. You should not have to pay more than $25, probably less - negotiate.

To be on the safe side, you should be there within 90 minutes if not checking bags, 2 hours if checking bags.

For a 1am flight, you can be at the airport in no more than 25-30 ins, so leave by 10:30 or 11, if no bags.

I've taken that flight. I left the LA 2hrs. 15mins. before the flight & had lots of time to spare. There's very little traffic on the roads that late & since there are almost no other flights leaving at that time, the wait at the counter & in security is virutally nonexistent.

You can give yourself more time by paying your exit task ahead of time and having your customs form pre-filled out. That gives the "gate keepers" no excuses to get into the line to the ticket desk, and will save you up to half an hour.

United includes the exit tax in the ticket now.

At 1 AM you should have no problem with two hours. I took the 1 PM Delta flight two weeks ago and the security line was 2 1/2 hours long. It started 500 feet outside the terminal, on the sidewalk outside around the curve. Longest line I've ever seen anywhere in the world. Ill never travel on a Sunday afternoon again. I used Uber for all my short trips but use one of the known drivers for the airport or beach and fishing trips.

I doubt it was 2.5 hours. Everybody would miss their flights. I bet it was less than an hour. :P

I've experienced 90 minute Spirit check-in lines in FLL. And that didn't include the Customs and Immigration lines afterwards.
