Hi again, As mentioned before, I will be coming to SJ towards the end of APR (FRI-TUE) and am hoping to stay at a place which is close to some inexpensive MPs and bars and is also safe to walk around during the day (and at night would be a bonus, too). I saw on Wikitravel that the Barrio de California (?) is an eclectic place, but not sure if I should stay in that area? The biggest thing is if I can stay in an area which is fun, but not sketchy. I don't plan on bringing any chicas back to my hotel, so I think that may give me some more options on hotels to stay at? In a nutshell, can you all please advise on a good place in SJ to stay which is near to "budget" MPs and one that has nightlife near it? It's okay if the nightlife is more mellow and not the "girlie bar" vibe. Thanks! ![]() |

I suggest you look through the newbie forum and see what others have been told. |

Not to self promote but I think my newbie thread offers an admirable crash course. viewtopic.php?t=48526 In terma of hotels you might consider Morazan, which I did not cover in the guide. It's on the cheaper end of the scale and near the Del Rey. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk |

Hi, I was thinking of something above a hostel/backpacker hotel; I suppose basic is good enough for me, as long as there aren't roaches and it has A/C. Sorry about that, I'll dig in deeper to the prior newbie threads, I guess no one likes answering the same question 50,000 times ![]() Do any of the hotels have MPs in them which offer extras? Again, I'll check out the prior threads to see if it has already been asked and answered. Thanks again and pretty much I'm looking for a decent hotel which is a step above a backpacker/hostel vibe. |

If that the case, even Hotel Morazan might be too pricey for your needs...try Hotel Paradise, right across the street from Hotel del Rey, Blue Marlin bar, on Avenida 1. |

Do any of the hotels have MPs in them which offer extras? The only hotel/MP combo I know of is Zona 2. It is probably outside your budget. A massage in the MP's is the extra. In fact, the places I think you are referring to as MP's are not called MP's. Most are called pensions. The ones that have MP in their name (there are a few) probably do not offer any extras. |

Cockroaches will inherit the earth. Might as well get used to them, they are really common in latin american countries. Besides, the alternative is carcinogenic pesticides. If they could laugh, they would be laughing at us humans. |

The Morazon a whole of posters put the Morazon Down but I wonder how many of them have accually stayed there. Some will say it is a dump but most have stayed in the cheap rooms. I have stayed over 30 times always on the 5th floor and the suites are nice. I have stayed at most of the hotels downtown but now split my time between the LA and SM. Because of management change. But I will bet that most of the posters have never even stayed at the Morazon remember you get what you pay for and the master suite is nice |

I did on my Rookie trip and it wasn't fun. I got EXTREMELY Lucky nothing bad happened! #3. It's probably better to stay home and save more money before going to San Jose the first time. On your second trip, you'll have first hand info on spending less. I'll be saving a minimum of 500 USD on my second visit later this year. Probably more with the CRT discount that I didn't have on visit one. #4. Pay to be a CRT VIP and get THE CARD for discounts that pay for the fee on day one. Then study the VIP Sections. Wish I had prior to Rookie trip. #5. Sounds like you'll be shocked, disapointed and/or get into trouble w/o an experienced wingman. I toured the "cheap" MPs/Pensions with a pro wing so I knew who to see and not see and not be the only Gringo in said "cheaps". My 2 Colones. Play it safe. NJ |

And here's my overview of Paradise. viewtopic.php?t=48493 OP got some good advice from Nosejelly. If a 1st timer... stay at one if the 3-4 hotels mentioned many times on CRT. Not that hard, pick 1 and stay there. In SJ: fun, clean, quiet, a/c, convenient AND safe are not the easiest combo on the cheap. Save up until you can afford it. SJ is one of the more expensive places in centro america. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk |

Since you are going in late April, I would choose Zona 2. It's a hotel and a massage parlor, all in one. The girls hang in the bar but you can take them to your room for an hour if you stay there for I think $40-45 (it's $60 or 65 if you don't stay at the hotel). They have a special until end of May, $70/night. Get a CRT VIP mmebership. See links below. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=48750 https://costaricaticas.com/join-now/ BTW- the massage parlors in CR are pretty much brothels. Get that "extras" mentality out of your head, you are not in US anymore. ![]() |
