There is no sure fire way to know. Smell alone means little. Obviously, if it smells bad, it's dirty or infected, easy one. But if it smells ok, there's no guarantee that it's clean and "clean".

Be careful with antibiotics. Taking antibiotics when you don't need them can make your body a "tolerance" for them and makes them less effective when you actually do have an illness.

Also, self-medicating like this is dangerous for everybody, not just the person taking them. When people have antibiotics in their system, the viruses can actually mutate into different strains to make themselves drug resistant.

I carry PH test strips, like the kind you check hot tubs and pools with.
They sometimes get a little skittish about dipping in the pond so to speak but here
are the results you should use:
0-5.5 highly acidic breeding ground for much flora and fauna.
5.5-6.5 lick at your own risk.
6.5-7.5 get your nose and full face and just bury it in there.
7.5 and higher a little risky as some bacteria flourish at that level.
It's just that simple.
