Post subject:  Business trip.... Should I partake?

I will be down in San Jose for business for a week soon. I will be working / staying near the America Free Zone. I think most of my nights are free.

I have partaken in many places, in the US, Mexico (TJ), and Canada. This will be my first time really out in a foreign country (Canada and Mexico do not really count). However, none of those were on business trips on the company's dime.

The big question is that should risk my job by mongering? What kind of trouble can I get into?

I doubt I can take a tica to my hotel, so what are my other options?

You should be ok if you keep a low profile and don't brag about your experiences to your business associates. Search the board for info on MPs or short time hotels such as the Officina. Don't argue with the chicas about the price in your hotel room like the nitwit Secret Service agent did in Cartagena.
And don't put the chicas on your expense account. :)

Well you self-identified the risks already in terms of job security. Not knowing the nature of your work. If you're a christian outreach minister, you are probably history if your flock finds out. Cameraman for Vivid Entertainment. They might give you a raise for scouting new talent.

kidding aside...

A big FAT no to having a chica in your biz trip paid hotel room. Low chance you survive that if it becomes known to your employer. And let's say they give you a warning or whatever. From then on you're known as the guy who had a whore in his room on that work trip.

Know your company policies. For instance, with my rather large employer... on travel I'm an agent of the company. I get in a street fight at midnight and they could take issue with it. Probably wouldn't, but they could. Get a DUI on biz travel, gone. They don't want their name in the news attached to the behavior of any one employee.

Imagine a headline, "Spudd preventively detained in San Jose while on business for Acme."

Now, the probability of that happening depends entirely on you. Go to known places, behave and keep a low profile. Probably near zero percent you'll have a problem.

If you aren't a drunken target you will be fine
Other options are many short time spots (not quite like mexico) but maybe other guys can chime in w locations
If you leave your hotel and ask a taxi to take you to Del Rey every last one will know where to drop you

Be discreet, but go for it!

Spudd, not to be picky, but when you ask for advice as a newbie on this board, that's assuming you are legit, it is a good thing if you acknowledge those people who take the time to respond to your questions.

I apologized.... Thanks everyone for your advice.

I'm currently in the area, but have not partaken.

I find everything so intimidating. So far, only the work and hotel people speaks English. I even had trouble buying a bottle of water. I already gotten lost once, paying a big amount to get back to my hotel.

I have no cell access nor internet when I leave the hotel/work.

I'm still deciding whether I should risk it.

Yeah you're in a tough spot being way out from downtown.

I'd say you have slightly closer sala/mp options in Heredia, but you're probably restricted to evening/night action only. That and limited spanish probably make it a no go situation.

I was sent on 2 long term assignments (6 week and then 5 weeks second time) to Asia and had to make the same decision. I was with a couple of co-workers each time and they would frown upon the hobby and rumors would spread like the plague around teh company. I'd be done in no time. I did not partake because of the ridiculous prices, the fact that it was India, the women were fat and ugly, and most of all, there would no way that I could explain why I went out at night alone and did not want company. I'm not the going out after work to strip clubs type of guy, so they know that would be unusual. I was not going to risk my career on some tang. If you have a weekend free, tell them you are going away for the weekend, get a room downtown and Phuck your brains out. Think what would happen if you got caught doing it. There may be some ethics clause in your company's code of conduct that they can use to fire you for cause. If you have a career in the field, not worth it IMO.

They actually gave us an orientation before the trip about things to avoid (drugs, hookers, etc) and tips for international travel. Thanks for the tips, I've only take 60 trips abroad.

Keep in mind also that there is a crazy expat who extorts and blackmails people just like the OP. He places fake ads on craigslist. Gets the sucker to send a face pic , use his real email address, call from his company paid hotel room. Then the trap is set. The crazy expat then threatens to expose the sucker to his employer, wife, and on social media.
This nut posts these fake ads on CR craigslist every day, has been doing this for years. His posts always ask for face pics and other personnel info. Beware of this nut.
