Depends on where you are and are staying. Jaco- shorts are fine and beachwear. Cocal and Casino- In San Jose- around town and night time wear slacks or jeans. Around a Hotel like SL- shorts are OK during the day but most guys wear slacks during the evening.

This topic has been beaten to death. Please search the Newbie forum for "dress","shorts" and such. Hours of commentary in there.

Wear flip flops, not the designer Nike's, but the $1.69 made in China ones, cut offs, and a wrinkled 8 year old t shirt and you'll fit right in.

Wear loose fitting shorts and no underwear and the girls will play with your dick at the bar. Just be sure to keep the mouse in the house

Be comfortable. That's the bottom line. Forget these "rules" are about shorts and flip flops. The usual reason guys give about these rules is so the tourist blends in and doesn't stand out.

You could wrap yourself in a Costa Rican flag and you would still be a gringo and everybody will know it. Very few of us (those with Latino backgrounds) may be able to blend in but 99% of us pasty white guys are not going to fool anybody.

What's funny is that you can spot a gringo monger from a mile away. Why? Because he'll be wearing jeans or slacks and a collared shirt trying to blend in, but still be gringo white, while most regular tourists (those who came to look at waterfalls and monkeys, not naked women) are wearing shorts and sandals. I have never read on Trip Advisor anybody suggesting that tourists wear less comfortable clothing to try to blend in. I always found that pretty amusing.

Wear a toga and some sandals, then put a olive branch on your head.
Walk around with your beer saying " toga toga "

I did both on my last trip. Honestly I felt better about myself cleaning it up a bit for the evening... pasty white skin and all. That's me.

My advice to the OP, do what suits you. Nobody cares.

Heck, make a tank top that says: YO PAGO CIEN! You'll be the life of the party.

Just go in your birthday suit.

BTW- There is no set attire. You will not be treated any differently no matter what you wear.

The way you look and the way you act are related, and do indeed affect the way people deal with you, whether it be the chicas or the locals in the parks. First impressions, and all that.

By all means, be comfortable. The locals are used to gringos in shorts, especially the street beggars and bums.

OT but one of the best costumes I ever saw...

Guy in med scrubs and a white lab coat. Opens the coat and inside has all kinds of stuff hanging inside: salad tongs, turkey baster, flashlight, magnifying glass, clothes pins, safety goggles, rubber chicken, etc.

Back of the lab coat: "Freelance Gynocology" followed by his phone number.

Bull shit :!:  Maybe YOU won't! But then, how would you know if you were being treated differently :?:

As stated, this subject has, over the years, been beaten to death with almost always the same guys on each side. But the one thing that is always there is Orange stating that the reasoning by those for dressing like the Ticos is to "blend in". Orange is the ONLY ONE who repeatedly makes this statement!! That along with "us pasty white guys are not going to fool anybody."

And you know what?? He is correct in his second statement! Where he is WRONG is the reason for not dressing like a dippy tourist while walking around San Jose (unless you are a younger guy which most of us are not). At least for the vast majority of us who do not wear shorts, flipflops, and loud shirts here it is a simple matter of showing respect to the people and their customs when in THEIR COUNTRY. Gee, what a novel idea  The one thing is, YES, we Gringos will ALWAYS be recognized as just that, "Gringos"; but we will and do draw less attention if we are dressed more in what is considered "proper attire for men" by the locals than if we are dressed like freaks (in the Ticos minds).

As for Orange's comment about spotting a gringo monger a mile away because he is dressing like the locals while the regular tourist are in shorts and sandals, he must be talking about a different SJ than the one I have walked around in almost every day of the year for the last 10 years. When the locals see a lone Gringo or a group of Gringos (men), no matter what they are wearing, and regardless of whether they are right or wrong, Ticos automatically think "MONGER" (sex tourists)! When they see a Gringa or a group of Gringas or a mixed group, they think "regular tourist" no matter what they are wearing. And quiet frankly I see A WHOLE LOT MORE 60+ yo mongers dressed in wrinkled, old, trashy looking shorts and loud shirts with flipflops than I see regular tourist dressed like that. Yes I know guys are on vacation and "gonna dress like they want" but where the hell is your pride. Would you go shopping (except at Walmart! ) in your home city or town dressed like that?? Ever wonder why we are called "the ugly Americans" But do Ticos really care how we dress? NO!

But by the way, and a little off topic, but every time I see a group of young Gringa tourists I think the same--"where is their pride"?? Why in hell would they go anywhere in public dressed like they do? Just reinforces why I live here!!!
