First mistake: Made arrangements with a favorita to be with her the next day and would pay her then. She agreed but then had to cancel and she would not be around until after I left. DO NOT DO THIS !!! These ladies deserve to be paid for services rendered at the time the services are received and for the negotiated price regardless of how well you know them. No RFM from her but I sent her the money anyway. To #*&@ing bad if you disagree with the fact that I did this. Second Mistake: As you try to learn Spanish be very careful in not only what you say but how you say it. Usted Tiene mi corazon is a dangerous expression. I meant it as a way of saying to a favorita she was special to me and she thought I meant I was in love with her. I am not in love with her. Use "Usted es muy especial para mi" which may be dangerous too, but is safer. I'm sure there are other ways of letting a favorita know you like her more than the other ladies and that expression should be used. NEVER USE Te Amo except with your wife !!!!!!!!! There is a major cultural difference between visitors to Costa Rica and Costa Rica. What you think is innocent may not be and will most likely be mis-understood. Yes, I am embarrassed by my mistakes this last trip but have learned my lesson. In this case idiota, galipollas, tonto, estupido and a few others all fit so take your pick. Got to change my signature soon. |

+ 1 also but thanks for sharing the insights and subtleties of Spanish--might save somebody some grief. Agree about learning English because it's such a polyglot language--elements from everywhere all mashed together. Look at the difficulties and errors made by native speakers. |

No, she deserved to be paid - the fact that she was a no show (for whatever reason(s) ) the next day was on her - you did the right thing by paying her - but you did nothing "wrong" In fact, you are a stand up guy ![]() (Trust me - I've blasted enough fools on this site lacking common sense, or were just dopes - if I thought you were doing something wrong, I have zero problem in telling you ![]() As to language.....congratulations on trying to learn Spanish - I'd stay away from the nuances, especially those that could get you married, however most make allowances for non native speakers - you will know you are in trouble if she replies, "Pues, tu quieres un boda" or words to that effect (roughly, you want a wedding?) ![]() ![]() ![]() Don't beat yourself up or be too hard on yourself - I don't think you did anything really bad - I mean, you didn't use the word "tica" to mean whore, or something terrible like that, right ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

RoadMn295 wrote: I'm not sure I understand the "no show" thing. To my way of thinking, if you make an arrangement with a chica but she then no-shows, she deserves no payment because she provided no service. So I don't get why it's the right thing to do when the girl essentially fuccked you over. I mean no disrespect to anyone, including Patriot's favorita. I'm just asking for clearer explanation so that I'm certain I understand the dynamics of this. I got the impression she was with him the previous day, they had plans for her to return the next, and she did not - but was owed money from that previous day. If this is the case, she would still be owed money - I did not get the impression - and I could be wrong - that this was a total no show and he still paid her - please, tell me its not so Patriot:P ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Obviously she would be owed nothing for a no show - perhaps Patriot can clear this up...... |

I'm not wanting to jump to conclusions but I think in his first line, 2nd sentence he means, "She agreed but then (I) had to cancel...." Notice how "I" is implied in the first sentence. Lost |

Scuba1 is correct: I was with her the previous day and did not have the cash on me at the time, but could get to the bank. She needed to get to a class and could not wait. I can't complain because she had the courtesy to let me know that she would not be able to make it well in advance of the appointed time. I wasn't happy about it but knew I could make other plans and did not waste time hanging out waiting. Another favorita saw I was upset and comforted me later in the day. ![]() ![]() |

agreed, also watch the 'literal translations' as well. I once texted "silly girl" to a fav, rent into Spanish as "niƱa tonta". (Gotta love Google translate, huh?) It seems that "silly/stupid" and "girl/boy" infers a retarded Ch*ld, and it was explained to me that in street-speech, I called her a f*kin retard to her face! It didn't end well... but it DID end IT! ![]() |
