First off, great forum and lots of useful info. I am excited for my first trip to CR. I have a few questions:

1) I land Sunday evening (7:30pm). Will there be any girls at the bar on Sunday evening , or am I better off calling it a night and resting up for Monday?

2) As a single traveler and first timer, which would you recommend DR or SL? The DR is appealing due to shear convenience of the bars and nightclub while the SL seems to have a sense of camaraderie (sort of like a frat) and the rooms appear to be much nicer

3) Are American products readily available in San Jose? I use Aveeno lotion and cannot bring enough in the 3oz TSA approved for an entire week. I would prefer not to check my bag and buy locally

4) If you had a week to spend on hobbying and sightseeing, would you go to San Jose twice in a week (e.g. Sun-Tue and then Fri-Sun) or would you mix it up with Jaco (e.g. San Jose Sun-Tue and Jaco Fri-Sun)

Thanks in advance

By the time you get thru immigtation etc., getting to the gulch, checking in, unpacking, it'll be 9:30 or so-on a Sunday night, head directly to the DR & get laid. Don't wait for monday, there will be willing girls available!2) As a single traveler and first timer, which would you recommend DR or SL? Def the SL, nicer rooms, breakfast, no chica fee, guys around to help ya, more laid back environment.
3) Are American products readily available in San Jose? I use Aveeno lotion and cannot bring enough in the 3oz TSA approved for an entire week. I would prefer not to check my bag and buy locally
Yes. I shop @ MasxMenos & find many food items & toiletries of U.S. origin. Theer's also a Wal-mart in town.4) If you had a week to spend on hobbying and sightseeing, would you go to San Jose twice in a week (e.g. Sun-Tue and then Fri-Sun) or would you mix it up with Jaco (e.g. San Jose Sun-Tue and Jaco Fri-Sun)
If you're in San Jose only Sun-Tues you'll see the worst of the mongering.. Like most places Sun-Tues = quiet. Wed-Sat. = party! Thanks in advance

SinCity- thanks for the informative response. Who would have known WalMart was in CR. That simplifies packing and confirms my choice not to check a bag.

Mike, what Walmart is a $20 taxi ride? Alajuela? or San Sabastian? (Actually about a $10 ride). Walmart in Guadalupe is less than 5 kl from the SL. I have walked it more than once and it is not a really long walk. Taxi would be about C2000 or $4.

For the Guadalupe Walmart (big and new, not a Mas x Menos) , I take the blue/white Guadalupe bus from the side of Auto Mercado. The cost is about 50-60 cents each way.

This Walmart is very similar to their stores in the States, but I don't think there is a pharmacy in the store. Their prices are pretty good, too. That's why the store is crowded.

Sometimes I'll walk from the gulch to this Walmart-----about 25 minutes at my speed.

Look at Google Maps for Walmart Guadalupe Costa Rica for the location in relation to the gulch.

If you do not have a room yet, SL may be tough. It is the slow season and Sunday is OK. Del Rey will have girls -- maybe not too many on Sunday.

Wal-Mart owns Mas X Menos now (at least a chunk of it). I buy all the Equate brands (wal-mart's generic marque) at MXM every week.

I say Dl Rey for a newbie is best due to the 24 hour operation and other reasons then maybe after a few visits SL . I prefer Morazán maybe a 2.5 star place 1 block from the DR.
